This year the biggest event in World Football takes place in South Africa - the FIFA World Cup Finals. The good and the great from the footballing nations are all represented. As current holders of the World Cup the Italians would dearly love to hold on to the trophy, however, if the qualifying campaign was anything to go by, The Italians will have to improve dramatically to retain the prize.
Spain had a tendency to under achieve on the big stage and yet their 2008 triumph in Europe bucked that trend. Players such as Fernando Torres, David Villa and Xavi Herndandez are all at the very peak of their games and will be a tough force in this years competition. The Brazilians and the Germans are teams with many World Cup finals under their belts. These teams know how to pace the competition and dig deep for results. The Brazilian team also includes a host of stars such as the striker Kaka and the defender Maicon. Brazil bring their South American talent to South Africa knowing that only a place in the finals will be enough for their passionate fans.
Another South American powerhouse is Argentina, who despite their history of success in previous World Cup competitions, almost failed to quality this year. Their coach, Diego Maradona, may have been a star player but his tactics and strategies as a coach leave more than a little to be desired. Under Fabio Capello, England navigated the qualifying group stages with relative ease. Whether the likes of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard can go all the way in the final stages remains to be seen. What's certain is that the World Cup Finals 2010 will be a great competition (that the Germans probably win!)
