The Gospel of Freedom - Three Reasons Why Jesus Came to Set You Free

Jesus told his disciples, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free." In this statement we get a glimpse at why Jesus left his heavenly throne to appear on earth as a man. He came that you and I might be truly free. This article discusses three reasons why Jesus came to set us free.

First, Jesus came to set us free because God loves us and wants the best for our lives. In the first chapter of the Bible, the author tells us that both male and female were created in the image of God. This means that each person is designed with a piece of the divine within them which makes each respective person valuable to God. As such it follows that you are very special to God too and that he cares deeply for your well being. He loves you so much he wants you to be free to live an abundant life.

Second, Jesus came to set us free because most of us are enslaved in some way. Liberty is not the same as freedom. Many are shackled by their liberty. Generally, we are in bondage to our desires for physical satisfaction, material wealth and social status. In regards to physical satisfaction, many are addicted to their appetites. Although, we are born with natural needs for food and sexual intimacy, many allow their desires for such things to intensify to the point of gluttony. Rather than control our appetites, we allow our appetites to control us. As to material wealth, we become enslaved to keeping up with the Jones'. The current economic crisis is as much about the general public wanting more than they could afford than the financial institutions trying to satisfy Wall Street investors. If the general public had not been enslaved to their inordinate desire for more, most of current crisis would have been avoided. Furthermore, people are enslaved to their desire for power and social status. Some are bent on organizing their own little kingdom on earth. Accordingly, they pour out their lives, spending countless hours, days, and years attempting to amass their empire which will be given to another upon death. God created the world with everything necessary to satisfy both your simplest and most profound needs. Jesus came to set you free from your bondage to inordinate appetites for physical satisfaction, material wealth, and social status.

Third, Jesus came to set us free that we might eternal life with him. God created you to live in eternal fellowship with him both in this life and on into eternity. Unfortunately, our slavery to self-satisfaction has caused us to fall short of God's best and sin against him. God cannot dwell with sinful people, so a remedy had to be designed. Our sin should have resulted in our eternal death but Jesus came to pay the penalty that we might be able to dwell with God and be free forever. Free from our appetites and free from the penalty of eternal death. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the gospel of freedom; that is the good news that we do not need to be slaves to our basic needs but can walk with peace and joy and live in continual fellowship with God.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the gospel of freedom. Unfortunately most people are living as slaves to their own appetites and longings. This article has presented three reasons why Jesus came to set us free.

8 Steps to a Winning Start at the 2010 World Cup

World cup betting analysts are expecting bets close to 1 billion US Dollars bid for the 2010 FIFA World Cup during the tournament as fans await their knowledge of the exciting game in the profits of the football World Cup betting market. Although it is clear that football is mostly a game of luck, a lot of football fans want to benefit from the exciting world of online betting on the 2010 World Cup Games. If you are a novice to the online gambling industry or might just feel intimated by the prospects of dealing with online bookmakers and betting through the Internet, we urge you to read on.

In reality, football betting is very easy, and these simple steps to World Cup betting will show you how to start:

Step 1 - Choose a Reputable Bookmaker

This goes without saying, as it will add an air of security to your online betting. Imagine the difference between placing a bet on Brazil to win the World Cup, as opposed to placing one on Algeria. You should invariably lean towards and choose a name that you are familiar with, one that you know and trust.

Names like Ladbrokes, William Hill and Paddy Power are probably some of the more popular high street chains of Bookmakers which will attract attention and loyal customers also to their site. However there are some great players in the online sports betting scene that deserve a mention: bookmakers like Bet365, Betfair and Sporting Bet all have a very good reputation with their punters.

Browse around, as ultimately it will be to your advantage! By visiting these bookmakers sites, even without opening an account, you will be able to get a good general feel of the user-friendliness of site. You do not want to get bogged down with a site which you find hard to navigate, or incredibly slow to load, because that will detract from your online betting experiences. There is much more to the modern world of betting online, and it is a far cry from the TVs in the old style high street bookies. You can now bet on your favourite team from the comfort of your own home.

Step 2 - Keep your Options open

Having more than one online bookmaker is a great way to maximise your betting potential.

If, for example, if you only have an account with Bet365 which is widely regarded as being one of the best online bookmakers (probably the single best one), then come the big matches of the world cup games, you will be limited to the bookmakers´ prices. Whilst there are some very good bookmakers in the market, like Bet365 and BWIN, both of which offer amongst the most generous odds in the market, you could source slightly different odds for your selection at Victor Chandler for example. This is where having multiple accounts can work in your favour, for selecting odds at 3/1 as opposed to 5/2, naturally will have a huge impact on your potential winnings.

One more thing to note about having multiple bookmakers is that you can take advantage on all the different offers each they are offering for the World Cup.

Step 3 - Seek Special offers

Special offers from the best online Bookmakers, are generally introductory deals (free bets for new customers, sign up bonus, first deposit bonus), which will usually reward customers signing up for new accounts with free bets. The general practice for this, is to match your initial deposit into a new account, or to match initial bets placed on a new account. These will be up to a maximum value of course, but different online Bookmakers will have their own introductory offers, and some are based on a tier system of bets, like Sportingbet, which can eventually reward you with up to GBP200 worth of free bets.

Step 4 - Open an Account

The special offers are hooks to attract new customers, and it is something which is good for the punter, for accounts are generally free to sign up for. There is nothing to lose when you are playing, for all intents and purposes, with free betting money. A simple search for customer reviews, and browsing independent sites will help you to make informed decisions about which Bookmaker may be the best for you. Other things to take into consideration are the level of support which a site offers, site ease of use, the ease of contacting staff at the bookmakers, through different channels, should you have an issue with anything to do with the site. Another very important factor should be Security and how the bookmakers handle the privacy of your account. You should spend a bit of time reading through the sites´ Terms and Conditions and maybe playing for free before you deposit to help set your mind at ease.

Remember, opening an account with a bookmaker should not cost you money. When registering for your account, you will be asked to provide some personal information. You will find that some personal information is essential, some you can leave out if you wish. However should you gamble and win, most bookmakers would want all you personal information to ensure they are sending the funds to the right person. You do not need to deposit funds in your account upon registration, however some bookmakers will require you to register your card details. You can choose not to register your card, if you wish to pay with an alternative payment method.

One note to remember when opening a new account is to always choose strong usernames and difficult passwords to help protect yourself at all times.

Step 5 - Depositing funds

Once you are comfortable with the online bookmaker (be sure to read the terms and conditions) you can look at their depositing terms and options. Most bookmakers have various deposit options, just make sure you choose the option most suitable for your requirements. The easiest way to do deposit is with a credit card. One credit card that proves to facilitate withdrawals of winnings from your account is VISA.

Step 6 - Obtaining your Free Bonus Bets

Virtually all online Bookmakers offer Free bonuses to start betting for the World Cup 2010 games for all new depositors. If you have not deposited yet, you should automatically receive your free Bonus when you sign up. If you have already deposited, some bookmakers offer you a chance to earn a free bet to the bet you put. Please note that the free bet you there will be equal to the value of the first call. After the first bet and produce results you will receive a free admission coupon can be used for any market at any time.

Step 7 - Marketing your Bet

Once you have decided how much you wish to bet, Marketing World Cup betting is simple. Look for the football sports betting in the betting list and select the World Cup betting. Now select the market you want to receive. The simplest way to market your bet as a novice is to do it in the match betting market.

If you wish to place a bet before the match you can select the box or area in the screen showing the ´Result of the Production´, that is how much you will get if you place that bet and win. Your Selection 'will appear in a slip on the screen, and you must specify the amount you want to open, and ask the bookmaker to confirm the call.

If you are still not sure how to bet in the World Cup Games, what we suggest is for you to set the 'decimal'. Decimal odds are the simplest way to understand - just multiply your stake by the decimal odds to determine the total payments of the winning bet. Eg if you bet GBP10 and the decimal is 2.5, then the total payments of the winning bet will be GBP25.00

Step 8- Receive results

Your World Cup bets must be settled within minutes of the end of a match. If your bet wins, your winnings will be added to your player account. From this stage you should be able to withdraw your money, although it is best to read the bookmakers´ terms and conditions on withdrawals first.

Essential Travel Tips For the 2010 FIFA World Cup

The World Cup of Soccer is one of the most heavily watched, heavily betted, talked about sporting events every four years. It gets more publicity and generates more advertising dollars than any single sport at the Olympics, but it is run just as often. The atmosphere at the World Cup is always absolutely electric! Unfortunately, though, soccer is not known for the calmness and rationality of certain segments of the fan base. This year the host nation is South Africa, and while the FIFA World Cup committee is certainly hoping the violence-troubled nation can overcome its reputation for a fun, non-controversial World Cup, there are no guarantees. If you are travelling to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup, we look over some of the issues you'll face and the recommended level of travel insurance cover for the event.

All About the 2010 FIFA World Cup

The World Cup will be held in South Africa this year, from June 11 to July 11. The qualifying rounds are still in progress, so there is little indication of what nations will be in the final game - but whatever country it ends up being, the fans will be very emotional!

Potential Security Issues

The media has been reporting the possibility that the games will be used to draw attention to social issues like AIDS and prostitution in South Africa. It is also a given that the international profile of the World Cup might make it a terrorist or anarchist target. There seem to be several different interest groups wanting to piggyback off the World Cup to draw attention to their particular cause, meaning that the games are not likely to be completely without incident. Travel insurance should be considered a necessity, as much as a plane ticket if you're planning to attend.

Potential Logistical Issues

While you don't require a visa to enter South Africa for less than 90 days if you have an Australian passport, the expiration date of your passport can be no less than 30 days later than the expected end date of your stay. Check up on your passport expiration - your travel insurance won't cover this sort of logistical problem.

There will also be enormous demand on accommodation in the nine cities hosting World Cup games - Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Rustenburg, Port Elizabeth, Polokwanr and Nelspruit. Book your accommodation early - but make sure your travel insurance covers you for accommodation problems beyond your control. The high demand could make issues costly.

Recommended Level of Travel Insurance

South Africa is one of the most troubled countries in the world in terms of crime. When thinking about the level of holiday insurance you need, we'd recommend that:

You get full medical travel insurance cover. South Africa is not a fully developed nation, and has several diseases that are very rare in Australia
Logistical travel insurance cover is recommended, because of the potential difficulty in securing accommodation at a reasonable price of there is a problem with your existing booking.
We also recommend the highest level of travel insurance cover, which includes hijack benefit, mugging benefit, catastrophe cover and search and rescue benefit. Unfortunately hijackings and mugging occur frequently in South Africa.

FIFA World Cup Football 2010

Eavesdrop in the air you will get to hear "Shakira Waka Waka" and a bouquet of allotropic question from every nook and corner of the world. Who will win this long race? Who will be the final rider to this long race? Who will smile at the end? Who will win world cup football 2010?

Now mercury is at the apex among the football aficionados, supporters, spectators, football fans and citizens of the participant countries. When football-fever of 19th FIFA World Cup have pervaded the world-we with our consortium trying to share the warmth of it either from its adjacent or sitting before the television set.

Johannesburg, the city in South Africa, at its Soccer City stadium has witnessed the most awaited spectacular and vibrant opening ceremony with the hullabaloos of 94000 spectators. Other Global spectators enjoyed this splendid sensational moment before television set to arrest it for the next four years.

32 teams from 32 different countries will meet in South Africa to fight for the prestigious Football World Cup 2010 trophy.

Our great expectations were solidified by the mega start between the hosts and Mexico immediately after inaugural ceremony that would continue till July 11 in 64 games.

Brazil, Argentina, Spain, England, France are ahead in favorite list to win the mega-marathon race and Lionel Messi (Argentina), Wayne Rooney (England), Steven Garrard (England), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Kaka (Brazil), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Fernando Torres (Spain) are among the top seeds.

Brazil or Argentina? How England will finish? Messi or KAKA? Fernando Torres (Spain) or Rooney (England)? Christiano Ronaldo (Portugal) or Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast)?

Who will write the epilogue of this mega-marathon event? We have to wait till the final scene at Soccer City Stadium - Johannesburg. 10 stadiums around South Africa will personify the greatness of heroes coming from 32 countries.

There is a feeling that this World Cup can have a profound impact on how the continent of Africa is perceived by the millions watching from abroad. Here remained our great expectation that we will find rewritten football records in the lexicon of football history after the end of this two months' mega marathon workshop.

FIFA World Cup 2010 - New Zealand Vs Slovakia Preview

Rustenburg is the venue of this match of minnows New Zealand and Slovakia. This is only New Zealand's second World Cup appearance, and Slovakia's first big tournament. This match has academic importance at best for both teams, as Italy and Paraguay look likely to qualify from the group for the round of 16.

What New Zealand lack in skill they make up in discipline. Their recent form has not been encouraging. New Zealand had an easy ride in the qualifiers, winning 5 of 6 matches, and won a play off against Bahrain belying expectation. Star player Shane Smeltz  and Middlesborough striker Chris Killen are the men to watch in th NZ squad. Blackburn Rovers star, Ryan Nelson, holds fort in defence.

Marek Hamsik, 22, leads Slovakia, a newly independent country since 1993. Skipper Marek Hamsik burst into prominence thanks to his goal scoring ways with Napoli. The team has a Liverpool star in the making in Martin Skrtel. In recent months, although they lost to Norway, a draw against Cameroon and a convincing win against Costa Rica point to Slovakia's potential. Bolton Wanderer's Vladimir Weiss is the Slovakia coach's son, and a third pillar of the team.

Slovakia won 8 of 10 matches in a qualification group comprising the likes of Slovenia, Czech Republic, Northern Ireland, Poland and San Marino. So they are not likely to be fazed by the prospect of facing New Zealand, who are, if anything, weaker than the above teams.

In this battle of minnows, Slovakia hold an ever so slight edge.

A Simple, Low Risk Betting Systems For FIFA World Cup Goals - The Action As it Happens

Soccer not just invokes passionate fervor among its fans, but it also gives an opportunity for people to enjoy tournaments like the Wolrd Cup by sports betting. It is not just the players, team and sponsors who benefit from this event. Anyone can exploit this gold mine by betting during the games if they use the right tools. You can make money by betting on the Betfair and in this article we will look at goal betting for the FIFA World Cup. It is very easy to bet on Betfair. All you need to do is to make an account online on the Betfair website and then supply some funds in the account. You can use these funds to place bets on different matches online.

The advantage of betting on Betfair is that it is a betting exchange that allows you to be your own bookmaker. In Betfair, you do not bet against a bookmaker, but against other users. Betfair allows you to bet on any outcome of the match that you cannot do in case of a bookmaker system. You can buy and sell odds and place orders for them on Betfair. You can bet while the match is going on and you do not have to pay any commission. Betfair is the biggest betting exchange for sports and if you want to bet in the upcoming Soccer World Cup, then you should definitely use Betfair.

In order to win the bets on Betfair, you need to know about this sport and the recent trends in soccer. You have to understand the importance of various factors that determine the outcome of a game such as the team and players, the weather and the ground as they will change the odds of winning a bet. Before you start trading on Betfair, you should do sufficient research if you are not an ardent soccer addict or do not understand betting. You need to have a strategy before you start betting. It is also important to have an exit strategy.

In case of games where teams are expected to score goals, one good strategy to follow is to 'Lay the Draw'. When you Lay the Draw, you bet against the game drawing. However, it does not matter if the final result is a draw or not. As soon as a goal is scored by one of the teams, the price of back odds for the draw will rise. You can make a profit at this stage by buying your original stake back. The only way of losing when you are following the strategy of Laying the Draw is when the match ends at 0-0. There are very few Soccer matches in which no goal is scored and this strategy is a low risk way of betting on the FIFA World Cup using Betfair.

Betfair is an innovative way to bet on the World Cup. It has embraced recent trends on the internet by invoking a communitiy of people who share an interest in betting. In order to be amongst the successful members of Betfair those interested should learn about how to back and lay selections on Betfair. Something that can be learned quickly. Betfair has a large community and there are many guides to betting on Betfair, systems, and betting software available. Betfair software is suited to more experienced members and offers various features that enhance the Betfair experience.

Time to Use Technology to Assist the Soccer Referee

Yesterday, Thierry Henry escaped being punished for his infamous handball offence in the 2010 World Cup finals playoff against Ireland.

FIFA claims that they are 'powerless to punish the 1998 World Cup winning striker because their rules forbade them to do so if the original misdemeanor had not been seen by the match officials.'

For an organization that can demand up to $100million dollars of broadcasting rights from any country for the coming World Cup in South Africa, it is indeed a fiasco to be deemed 'powerless' under such circumstances. The fact is that, this kind of controversy will not be happening if only FIFA adopted what so many other professional sports has adopted, that is make use of video replay technology to assist their soccer referees to referee their games. Only the highest rungs in FIFA and God will know what is keeping the most populous game adopting technology to improve the game.

Many traditional critics argue that refereeing in soccer should remain status quo, so that the human error aspects of the game remain as part of the game. At the very top, FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, is a strong opponent to using any technology to assist the soccer referee. In this modern age, traditional people like Blatter ought to be replaced to move the sports forward.

In truth, FIFA can be held responsible for all the refereeing controversies that has ensue over the last century. Things got worse in the last two decades after instant video replay technology allow television to broadcast all poor refereeing decisions immediately to the world to see. How can you blame managers, players and fans from becoming enraged when they see a legitimate penalty been denied by soccer referees? Or a poor offside decision by the soccer referee that led to the eventual game winner? Worse, all these refereeing decisions has led to real instances of life and death, when referees who made crucial mistakes received death threats and are forced retire.

Remember Anders Frisk, the soccer referee from Sweden in 2005 after the contentious match between Barcelona and Chelsea in the Champions League? He was forced to quit after some poor decisions made that caused Chelsea to lose the eventual tie. In his own words, ''it's not worth carrying on....My safety and the safety of my family goes before anything else. These last few weeks have been the worst of my life.'' Soccer lost a very good referee that day. Can we blame him? Or the Jose Morinho who led that publicity assault against his poor performance? FIFA has got to take a significant part of the responsibility as well.

The scary thing is that this type of anti-referee stuff is also taking shape at the youngest age groups. Refereeing resources are already tight, and at the lowest and youngest level of competitive soccer, young players and managers are also learning from what they see on television to openly challenge the soccer referee's decisions and cause disputes. It has become acceptable to lambaste the referee whether he made the right or wrong call, depending on which side you supported. This does not speak well of the game. What kind of sportsman ship are we teaching our youths? What kind of refereeing standards do we hope to raise if the soccer referees' job continue to be the loneliest one in the world?

FIFA will always support the soccer referee's decision, right or wrong. But this kind of backing does not offer practice support for referees at all levels. What referees need is an understanding from all that they are human and that they can make mistakes. If these mistakes can be rectified at the right time in a match through technology and appeals, the footballing crowds will not become overzealous in condemning poor refereeing standards. Technology allows that to be done, but sadly, authority does not. Wake up FIFA, before someone really gets killed because of a poor refereeing decision. It should not come to that stage. Football is a beautiful game after all.

On the other hand, Tokyo (Japan's capital) hosted the Olympic Soccer Tournament in 1964. This event had served to put it on the world map of great nations. Only 14 teams competed in the international event. The champions was Hungary, followed in order by Czechoslovakia (silver medal), Germany (bronze medal), Egypt (4th), Romania (5th), Yugoslavia (6th), Ghana (7th), Japan (8th), Brazil (9th), Argentina (10th), Mexico (11th), Iran (12th), Morocco (13th), and South Korea (14th). The World Cup and Letting Go of the Past

The 18th World Cup was enjoyable. Behind the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup is the second most universal event. The world unites every four year when the Olympics air, while the world divides every four years when the soccer World Cup airs.

It's all about pride, glory, and bragging rights as nations compete in the most universal sport. It can be insulting when people from other countries brag about how their country's team defeated yours! Pride and a love for sport has sparked me to write this as I saw my beloved Australian Socceroos bow out of the World Cup after their best result.

Since the World Cup started in 1930 at Uruguay, Australia qualified for the event in 1974 where they lost every match remaining goalless the entire event. Early in 2006, Australia's streets were empty and there was silence through out the nation as they versed Uruguay for a place in the 2006 World Cup. We qualified for the second time in history after defeating Uruguay in a chair-gripping penalty shoot out. The silence was shattered as every patriot, sport-loving Aussie roared in happiness.

Tim Cahill broke Australia's goalless World Cup history when he scored a double against Japan to lead his country to their first victory in the event. On top of the world, the Socceroos versed Brazil and were defeated 0-2 in what well-known sport commentators referred to as a match Australia outplayed the number one soccer nation. After drawing with Croatia and moving into the second round of the World Cup, Australia faced soccer giants Italy.

The second round match kicked off and remained goalless for 92 minutes. In the 92nd minute and 50th second, with 10 seconds remaining in the game, Italian Fabio Grosso dribbled the ball into the penalty box. Australian Lucas Neill went to the ground as he tried to tackle the Italian, but a second later Fabio tripped (or FELL!) over the Australian defender. The referee, who shall remain nameless to preserve what little safety he has left, awarded the free kick. Francesco Totti then made a lovely penalty shot to qualify Italy into the quarter-finals and to remove every Australian's dream of a World Cup quarter-final birth.

So why have I lectured you on a nation's soccer history you probably care about more than a rat in a sewer?

A few days after experiencing my nation's dramatic soccer loss, I felt hopeless, empty, with a tonne of frustration and anger. I take my international sporting events seriously.

I know I'm being overly expressive about it all, but there are vital life lessons that you need to learn. I was aware of these lessons before experiencing my "soccer outburst" but everyone needs to be frequently reminded of them.

Life, or soccer in my case, gets the better of us most of the time. We let past experiences attach onto our backs and into our minds pulling our current actions and thoughts backwards. Our past experiences hold us back.

What I'm talking about is "letting go" or "moving on". It is often either:

1) A control issue. Something bad happened that negatively affects your life and you desire to influence it. You live in a false sense of hope and control wishing or thinking you could have changed the problem.

2) Overt focus on the problem. The problem persists in your mind causing lingering pain simply because you focus on the problem and it remains until you are able to let it go and move on.

My beloved Socceroos would have faced the control issue. In the last 10 seconds, in what has taken over 76 years to happen, a harsh call was made and they were removed from the competition. 39 972 106 minutes had passed since the Socceroo's last World Cup and the last 10 seconds determined the end result. The last 10 seconds! I'd calculated the time since the first World Cup to the penalty shoot because this is essentially the opportunity the Socceroos have waited for so long to achieve World Cup success.

Whether the call was right or not is beyond my point here. It is a harsh world. I couldn't agree more with "the worst thing, will happen at the worst time". The Socceroos, namely Lucas Neill, would be asking themselves "what if... what if this happened? What if another referee was in the game? What if I had done this?" I guarantee they would have been living in a false sense of control thinking about what they could have done to prevent the loss from occurring by not letting go of history. They are after all, only humans.

I on the other hand, was problem focused. The Socceroos had a superb World Cup and gained the respect as a soccer nation. But no! I complained and whinged for days, unable to move on. Argh! The game was 0-0 until the last 10 seconds! You can learn not only from my focus on the bad result, but also the pain I endured because I did not let go of the past.

Even if you think it's funny because I take the World Cup seriously, try and relate to how you dwell on bad results and don't let go of the past.

There's no way Australia is going into the quarter-finals so why have a little sulk about it? Remember the saying "there's no point crying over spilt milk"? I'm sure you would have heard of the saying before but we let our emotions overpower our logic, dominating our commonsense that history cannot be changed. Heck, I know this well and truly yet Australia bowing out of the World Cup infuriated me for days. We all need to be frequently reminded that history is exactly history. Nothing can be done about the past.

What you do need to take from the past is your experiences to learn. It would be foolish to make a mistake, endure the pain, and learn nothing from it to prevent the same problem from occurring again. I'm sure the Socceroos and all other soccer nations have learned from their World Cup experience.

What you don't need to take from the past is disempowering feelings and thoughts because you have not let go. An example is not forgiving someone for the pain they've caused you. You are willing to cling onto the unhappiness and pain of a past problem by not forgiving the person that hurt you.

You live in truth and happiness by accepting what you can currently control through living in the present and letting go of the past. Nothing good happens with an unhealthy bondage to past negative events. Learn how to forgive someone and you free yourself from emotional pain.

It's time to let go of the past that's been holding you back from living a full and happy life. It's called "the past" because it is suppose to be in the past. Don't be afraid or lazy to comeback and read this as you're guaranteed to let your emotions dominate your logic and let the past control your happiness again and again. Let go of the past and live in happiness.

I'm now happy for Italy and congratulate them in qualifying for the quarter-finals. The worst possible call from an Aussie's point of view was made at the worst time. The Socceroos didn't make it and I accept that. Well done Italy.

Are Penalties a Fair Way to Decide the World Cup?

Every 4 years we have the soccer world cup. Sometimes the teams are so closely matched that the world cup final moves into penalties. This happened 4 years ago in Germany during the 2006 world cup final between Italy and France with Italy becoming the world cup champions. But is going to penalties at the end of a world cup final fair?

The world cup attracts hundreds of millions of viewers every 4 years, during the world cup finals 32 teams from different countries play 64 matches to decide which country is to become the world cup champions. These millions of views are supporting there country hoping for glory.

4 years ago France was left disappointed to lose to Italy after a penalty shootout at the end of the world cup final. Many people say it is unfair that the game even went to finals. Soccer is a great sport where in a moment notice 1 team can suddenly come back from many goals down only to come and win the game. Soccer is a team game and through how the team plays either through attacking, or defending will determine the outcome of the game. Penalties takes away from this. When penalties are used at the end of a game it is no longer about the team, its all down to 1 person, the goal keeper. This may be alright during a regular game as of course the game needs to end sometime, however in such a large game shown to millions across the globe it can often lead to a huge disappointment when the teams can not battle it out till the end.

On the other hand many say that penalties are part of a soccer game. Penalties only occur once the 90 minute game has been played, and 30 minutes of extra time has also been played and the scores are still even. That's over 120 minutes with injury time. If scores are staying even after this length of time then they are unlikely to change much as the players are usually very tired by this time, and only 3 substitutions are allowed during a game which are usually all long complete before this stage of the game. Because the game is shown around the world TV schedules have to be changed due to time constraints, and if the game goes on too much longer peoples daily schedules may also be affected.

Overall depending on if your a soccer fanatic or simply someone cheering your country on to win will depend on if you are in favor of penalties during a final or not. Soccer fanatics may want to see the best team win, others may simply find 120 minutes too much and want a result as soon as possible. Are penalties fair? You decide.

FIFA 08 Tricks Guide

To really excel as a FIFA 2008 player, you'll need to get to grips with some of the great skill moves in the game. With this FIFA 08 tricks guide, you can very quickly learn some of the important FIFA 2008 tricks and skills and then teach your opponents a lesson in football mastery!

First and foremost, you really need to learn the Blanco Hop. The best bit is, it's actually pretty simple to master. Many players aren't even aware of it, so it's likely you'll also have the element of surprise on your side.

The slide tackle is, of course, one of the most familiar moves you'll see. This is when a player tries to nick the ball from you by sliding along the ground. When you're in possession of the ball, it's difficult to get out of the way and dodge your sliding opponent's tackle. To make it worse, even if the player fouls you when making a sliding tackle, they still gain a slight advantage - because the play stops, and they have time to reorganise their defence. That's where the Blanco Hop comes in. You can turn the sliding player into your advantage, by skipping past the prone player and keeping control of the ball. And because they're lying on the ground, you have an immediate head start over them!

Okay, what do you need to do for a Blanco Hop? First, you must have complete control of the ball - just hit L1 to halt with the ball stationary by your feet. Wait while the other player runs in and begins to start their slide tackle, then press down the L2 button (left trigger). While keeping it pressed, then move the right thumb stick - with ease, you'll flick the ball up and hop (hence the Blanco Hop) over the oncoming opponent. On screen, you'll look like you stumble slightly. Don't worry, though - you're on your feet and your opponent is on the ground! You'll have a nice healthy lead by the time the other player gets up.

Try out this great new skill - by using this FIFA 08 tricks guide before your friends, you'll stun them with your masterful skills.

Arguments to God's Existence

A major question that has troubled numerous persons and raised controversy is the one related to God's existence. Does God exist or is he just a fabrication? Individuals ranging from ordinary people to reputed scholars have tried to find the answer and to offer arguments either in favor or against it. The article will present some of the most invoked reasons to sustain God's existence.

The first argument follows the analogy with the ball moving. A ball cannot roll without the impulse imprinted by an outside force. Similarly, the universe wouldn't have come into existence without a force to start it. Some choose to say that this "external" force was God.

The second and most widely circulated argument in favor of God's existence is the one according to which such a complex and intricate world of ours couldn't have appeared out of nowhere. There must have been a superior entity that created it on the basis of an intentional design. Therefore, the God is the great Architect behind this wonderful piece of art called Earth.

The humans' tendency to make the difference between good and bad and to support their deeds on moral, ethical bases is called down as another argument to advocate the existence of a supreme authority. Without this power of judgment, the world would be chaotic. Nevertheless, critics might object that there are heathen peoples who are capable of good deeds without being aware of the Bible's God.

The Bible is put forward as another argument for the existence of God. Some view it as a masterpiece and do not consider humans capable of producing such a collection of beauty, wisdom and theological truth. Nevertheless, there are detractors to this argument who argue that the Bible has its errors and reports of human brutality.

A different and interesting reason for believing in the existence of God was proposed by Blaise Pascal (1623- 1662). He concluded that God must exist supporting his affirmation with a series of benefits such as a good afterlife. Here are the main premisses that led to the conclusion that God has to exist:

If God doesn't exist and one doesn't believe in him, it all ends when one dies;

God doesn't actually exist, but if you choose to believe in him you benefit from a decent life;

God does exist and, if you believe in him, you are going to be rewarded;

God exists, but, if you choose not to believe in him, you end up in hell.

Hence, it is safer to "put your bets" on God and choose to believe in his existence. The price of believing is low, but of not believing is high, in Pascal's conception. However, he promotes an imposed belief in God, which is quite cynical. What if God chooses to punish a false believer and reward a non-believer who is well-behaved instead?

Struggling With the Cross, 2

Final in a relating of some of my old journal entries...

The cross theme in the teaching of Jesus is somehow wound up with the love theme. Greater love has no man than this, that he would give his life for his friends. The laying down of the life for others is at the heart of the cross. We do not die to show bravery and courage but love. The cross is the purest form of love available.

It is this form of love that trumps fear. Jesus had to overcome fear in the garden. His love was real but it was hindered by human flesh that cried out for deliverance. The victory of Calvary was won in Gethsemane. We must not assume that because we are afraid to do something, or just plain do not want to do it, that this thing is not of God and not of the cross. In fact these kinds of things are more likely to be candidates for crucified behavior. The object then is not to avoid such things but to, in prayer, overcome the obstacles.

Of course one must be motivated by God's perfect love. This too takes prayer. It is possible to give one's body to be burned alive, and still have no love in the heart. There is absolutely no profit in such sacrifices. So we follow not all those who suffer. Suffering itself is not the key. Nor self-styled "suffering for Jesus." There are those who create problems for themselves that Jesus never created. These are not the cross.

The cross is thrust on us, yet avoidable. It is the work of the pursuer, the enemy who seeks to kill and destroy us and our work in Christ. Persecution is pursuit. It was thrust on Jesus and he succumbed willingly. When it came after the disciples, they all fled. Filled with the Spirit, they all followed their Master. One must be filled with Jesus to desire to die for Him and to be able to do so.

But there is much practice in most lives before the main event. Many chances to die to self every day. It seems incomprehensible that a man who has lived for himself all his life would suddenly desire martyrdom on a "foreign field." Perhaps it is more of the same he is seeking: self-glory, power, attention, even sympathy, some sort of "legacy" for an otherwise failed experience with Christ.

Failed relations with... again remind me that the cross is as far away from me as ever. So unwilling to let go of my perceived privileges, and my plans. So unable to see other viewpoints, not to condone, but to understand and gently correct by life-style and message. Instead there is instant judgment. So unlike Jesus as to cause more serious doubt as to what my faith has meant through the years.

Am I in fact an enemy of the cross of Christ? Paul seems to so indicate, Philippians 3:17-19. He is addressing brothers. Is he talking about brothers? Or supposed brothers? It certainly seems so. After enjoining the church to follow him and his way of life, he tearfully describes the opposite kind of believer as an enemy of Christ and His cross. This person is headed for certain destruction. He worships and serves his own appetites. He glories in shameful things. He sets his mind on this earth, forgetting his true citizenship. Yet he claims to be a believer.

My attempts recently to break loose from my eating habits, and to stay focused on things that matter are not too encouraging. I had no idea how important my stomach is to me. Not just eating to stay alive but staying alive to eat. My needs. My comforts. My security. All about me. True worship and service that Jesus desires and deserves, has been given to me.

"Who shall deliver us from the body of this death? I thank God through Christ our Lord."

One who desires constantly to stay alive to serve himself and does not reach out to heaven and His neighbor is living in animosity toward the cross of Jesus. The longer one lives like this, and the extent to which one lives like this, is the measure of Christ in that man. Let no such self-centered one proclaim loudly his faith in Christ, for the watching world judges Christ by what it sees in me.

How to die! How to die! How to live to Christ!

How Was the World Created - God Or Big Bang?

Genesis, the first book of the Bible, presents the story of our world's beginning. An interesting explanation of our origins and evolution is thus proposed in conflict to what modern science claims. This clash between biblical affirmations and scientific ones has stirred even more the humans' curiosity regarding their provenience. So where do we come from after all?

This is what the Bible says: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." (NIV). Apparently simple and straightforward, but this affirmation leads to other questions and nebulous layers. The origins of the universe are assigned to a supernatural being. This Creator made the world, but who created the Creator? And how is this assertion to be reconciled with the latest scientific discoveries that suggest something else?

The controversy and the unclear mist that hinge around the matter of world's creation start with the very three words of the book of Genesis: b'reshit barah Elohim. The first word is often translated as 'in the beginning', which can prompt one to believe that it refers to the beginning of time or existence. However, the entire expression is translated as "When God began to create", which entails that God had been around for some time before the creation of our world. Barah is the third singular form of the verb "to create". Nevertheless, Elohim is a name for God that has a plural ending. This is not the only instance when God refers to himself in the plural. Through much of the book of creation the reader comes across such plural references ("Let us make man in our image"). Is this the traditional majestic plural? Or is God speaking on behalf of himself and other heavenly beings like angels? Or this plural reflects the concept of Christian trinity?

Unlike other creation stories from Near East, according to which world resulted from the mating between certain gods, the Bible's story presents the universe's coming into existence by means of God's words: "And God said, Let there be light! And there was light! God saw that the light was good."(1:34, NIV). Then the process continues in a six-day period during which light, elements of the universe, the earth, plants, animals, and finally humans are created.

Scientists, on the other hand, do not accept this version and have tried to come up with a more satisfactory explanation. This is how numerous theories about the origins of life and the universe have emerged. One of the most widely accepted is that of the Big Bang. According to it, all began with an immense explosion that probably occurred 15 billion years ago. A ball of matter and energy exploded and triggered the emergence of an expanding universe with stars and other cosmic elements. Life on Earth was a result of the symbiosis between the chemical elements and the physical conditions from our planet. Biological evolution has ensured the development of existence from the simplest forms to today's complex ones. Although quite complex, this theory is always haunted by a question: where did the ball of matter and energy come from and what triggered the Big Bang?

Top 10 Ways to Score Goals in FIFA 10

So you want to score more goals huh? Read these 10 easy to understand tips, then apply them one by one. I've used these to win over 400 Xbox Live ranked games. This should work for you too.

#1 - The Closer, The Better

The closer you are to goal, the better chance you have of scoring. I know long range goals look awesome, but we want to score as quickly and easily as possible. Only shoot within the 18 yard box and watch your goal total soar!

#2 - 2 Strikers is Better than One

Always play with two strikers up top and abuse your opponent with the 1-2 pass (aka wall pass). I have made a living scoring goals like this. It is simple and it works.

#3 - Slow Down

Do not be in such a hurry all the time. Slow down your player when shooting. Use pace control if you need to. The less movement you are making, the more accurate your shoot will be.

#4 - Use the Lobbed Through Ball

Ground through balls work great, but lobbed through balls work better. It is nearly impossible to block a lobbed pass, plus it beats most offside traps with ease. You get lots of breakaways.

#5 - Tap Shoot, Don't Press

I have scored far more goals with slower, more accurate shots than fast laser shots. Get into the habit of tapping the shoot button instead of pressing it down. FIFA 2010 has a VERY sensitive shot control system, and most times pressing shoot will give your opponent a goal kick.

#6 - Play With Fast Strikers

That means play with teams like Manchester United, Arsenal, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, etc. These teams feature the world's best strikers who all have superior speed, shot accuracy, and shot power. Follow the trend and score some easy goals with the best of the best.

#7 - Watch The Opponent's Goalkeeper

You can pick up some EASY goals by cherrypicking your opponent when the goalkeeper passes and/or throws the ball back into play after a save. Just stand in front of your opponent's defender, steal the ball, and tap shoot. The goalkeeper is usually out of position, and it is an easy goal. I have scored at least 50 goals doing this. Piece of Cake.

#8 - Cross Often and Use Your Head

When your opponent plays better than average defense, cross early and often. Crosses are a pain in the butt to defend. Don't you agree?

#9 - Use the Chip

There are 3 different basic shots in FIFA 2010: normal, finesse, and chip. The chip works wonders on a charging keeper. Learn all 3 shots and use them when necessary. Result: You score more goals.

#10 - Attack Aggressively RIGHT AFTER You Give Up a Goal

I will admit it: my weakest point IS right after I score a goal. Maybe it is a false comfort zone. Maybe I am just lazy. I can not tell you how many times my defense becomes a joke immediately after I score a goal. It happens to LOTS of FIFA 2010 gamers.

Instead of getting upset after allowing a goal, you should attack twice as hard because it is much easier to score when your opponent is still screaming GOOOOL!!!!!

St Augustine Florida Carries on the Name of Augustine of Hippo

St. Augustine, Florida was first discovered on August 28, 1565 by the Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles. It was their first sight of land, and that day just so happened to be the feast day of Saint Augustine of Hippo. Thus the colony of San Agustin was born.

Augustine of Hippo may have been canonized, but he was far more than just a miracle worker. He was the son of a pagan, a former hedonist, a father, a rhetorician, a teacher, and a philosopher.

Augustine was born in 354 AD in Thagaste, which is now Souk Ahras, Algeria. His father was a pagan, and his mother a devout Christian. He was raised Christian, yet when he left home to be a student at Carthage, he soon converted to Manichaeism, a Gnostic religion that originated in Iran around 200 AD. He followed this sect for many years, until he later abandoned it following a run-in with a Manichaean Bishop, Faustus of Mileve. For some time Augustine subscribed to the skeptical school expounded by the New Academy movement.

During this time, Augustine kept a concubine, a woman with whom he was very in love, which he admitted some time later as a priest in his Confessions. He had a son by her named Adeodatus.

After leaving Carthage, he moved to Rome with the hopes of finding a better teaching environment, but was met with slothful students. Shortly thereafter he earned a position as a professor of rhetoric at the provincial court in Milan, the most visible teaching position in the world at the time.

It wasn't until after he spent some time in Milan that he converted to Christianity. It occurred following inspiration, which came after reading an account of the life of Saint Anthony of the Desert. Shortly thereafter Augustine went to hear Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan and a renowned rhetorician. Ambrose gave Augustine a new perspective with this speech. Soon thereafter Ambrose baptized Augustine and his son.

During his priesthood, Augustine produced great number of written works, producing over one hundred separate compositions by the time of his death. His Confessions and On Christian Doctrine are internationally renowned pieces of literature. He died of an illness at the age of 75 as the Vandals sacked Hippo. When they returned to burn the city after his death, the two buildings to survive the fire were his cathedral and library.

Internet Marketing Opportunities at the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa - Part 2

With the FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament starting in South Africa in June 2010, there is an enormous opportunity for the hospitality industry to utilize internet marketing to boost their revenues. It is expected that there will be more than 350,000 visitors coming to South Africa over the 4 week tournament and this means a cash injection into the economy of around $1.3 billion. A large chunk of this money will go into accommodation, restaurants, pubs and sightseeing.

South Africa has always offered outstanding hospitality services. The standards of the hotels, restaurants and pubs is extremely high and, being a sport-crazy country, coverage of the soccer will be virtually everywhere. The sports-bar concept has been in existence in South Africa for a number of decades now, and almost every pub has television coverage of sporting events on view at all times.

The smaller accommodation facilities such as motels and bed & breakfast establishments are possibly not as well marketed as the larger, well-known hotel groups and this presents an excellent opportunity to the small business owner to sell their establishment on the internet. By utilising the services of effective internet marketing consultants, they can compete with the established groups on the internet global village.

There are always those visitors to countries who prefer to avoid the "tommy tourist" packages and like to do their own thing, such as hiring a car, doing their own sightseeing and going to restaurants and pubs recommended by locals. These visitors usually don't enjoy the package tour concept and often prefer to avoid large crowds. This presents a niche that the smaller businesses can target in their internet marketing campaign.

There also exists a huge opportunity to the entrepreneur tour operators, especially those that operate in the townships such as Soweto, south of Johannesburg. Soweto, now world-famous, is a vibrant city with hundreds of places of interest. Some of these include the Apartheid Museum, Hector Pieterson Memorial, Mandela Family Museum and, of course, a vibrant and exciting nightlife at the famous "shebeens" or taverns throughout Soweto. This market niche presents excellent internet marketing opportunities to the small tour operators.

South Africa is a beautiful country with thousands of places of interest. The locals are extremely proud of their country and are well-known for their warm hospitality. It is widely known amongst South Africans that tourism is a key industry and it represents economic growth and employment. It also give South Africans the opportunity to showcase the country they are so proud of as well as the massive social changes they have undergone over the past 15 years.

With the exchange rate well in the favour of the visitor, their spending power in South Africa makes it a worthwhile experience. Whether the visitors is buying the local currency with dollars, euros or sterling, they are getting an excellent return and will have great spending power. This will allow visitors to buy local products and take advantage of the huge curio industry in the country.

The internet marketing opportunities available for the hospitality industry in South Africa are unlimited over the next few months to the FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament and the best time to start a campaign is now.

In Part 3, we will look at the retail industry and how to use internet marketing to increase revenue during the 2010 World Cup.

The football fever has gripped onto people as the year approaches June 11, when FIFA World Cup 2010 will commence in South Africa. After all, this tournament is the world's most watched sports event which will be held for the very first time on the African continent. Triumphed with passion and vigor, there are various predictions and presumptions which are being made already across the world.

Considering the fact that Argentina has got such a huge potential in it, there are chances of it getting a well-placed position in the entire tournament.

Between Portugal and France, Portugal seems to be the likely winner of FIFA 2010. This team has got the potential to be in the finals, more so because of the fact that it has got one of the finest players in the team, that is, Ronaldo. France does not have the possibility of winning as much as Portugal.

We should keep in mind that this time the FIFA is not being played in Europe but in South Africa. There might be fewer chances for the European teams to make their way through qualifying rounds.

What is even more interesting to add here is that Brazil still remains to be one of the favorites amongst all. Although Ronaldo is no more a part of the team, and it seems the Ronaldhino has also been excluded, Brazil has still produced some of the best attacking players who will be able to score goals. They have both the quality to attack as well as defend themselves. Hence, the other teams will be running high on competition with Brazil.

Spain is the current European champions this season. Hence, Spain can be one of the likely winners of FIFA World Cup. Nonetheless, Spain does not have a good record in football World Cup. However, the team has got enough potential at the moment to break all its past records.

As an example of the way in which people are predicting likely results of the tournament, as at early April, the betting odds being offered for teams in the tournament include:

Spain
5 to 1

Brazil
6 to 1

England
6.5 to 1

Argentina
10 to 1

Italy
12 to 1

Germany
13 to 1

USA (a long shot)
51 to 1

Therefore, some of the predictions which are on the rounds are making news at the moment, and there are still likely to be further surprises as individual players are either ruled in or ruled out of teams due to injuries and other issues..

Nevertheless, football is a sport where there can be all sorts of unexpected possibilities to turn the tournament in a completely different direction.

Hence, let us expect the unexpected this time.

The FIFA World Cup - An Overview

The World Cup (W.C.), officially known as the FIFA World Cup, is an association soccer tournament for FIFA-affiliated national teams. That FIFA's quadrennial event can just be called The World Cup (in spite of there being similar tournaments for other sporting disciplines) demonstrates its immense popularity. It is an amalgam of a qualification phase and the finals phase. Naturally, the finals phase is the main event, taking place in a host country or host countries over a period of about four weeks.

Global scope

The FIFA World Cup is a truly global event. National teams from all seven continents participate in the qualification phase just over two years before the finals phase. In 2006, the Finals contained teams from each of the seven continents, due to the participation of Australia. The six continental zones include Europe, Oceania, Asia, Africa, South America and CONCACAF (North America, Central America and the Caribbean).

Currently 32 teams participate in the W.C. Finals. Zones are currently allocated spots as follows: Europe-14, South America-4.5, Africa-5, Asia-4.5, CONCACAF-3.5 and Oceania-0.5

The spots are allocated based primarily on the comparative strength of the confederations. For e.g. South America has four and a half spots, but only has 10 members. The half-berths are settled by intercontinental play-offs.

Brief history

World Cup soccer was first organised in 1930 as an invitation-only event. Prior to 1930, international tournament soccer was only available at the Olympics. A total of 19 Finals occurred between 1930 and 2010. There were no tournaments in the 1942 or 1946 because of World War II. The first W.C. tournament contained only 8 invited teams. Qualification was only introduced after the 1934 tournament.

There were 16 teams in the tournaments between 1934 and 1978, except for 1938 (15 due to Austria being annexed by Germany). The tournament expanded to 24 teams in 1982 and then 32 teams in 1998. Early tournaments consisted mainly of teams from Europe and South America. However, the expansion of teams ensured greater participation from African, Asian and North American teams.

World Cup Format

In the finals phase, the teams are split into eight groups of four teams each. The group stage is played in a round-robin format where the top two teams qualify for the second round. From the second round onwards, the tournament adopts a single-elimination knock-out format. Following the second round are the quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place play-off and the final.

The qualification phases are under the auspices of individual confederations. To ensure fairness, the matches are usually played on a home-and-away basis. This was not always the case, however. The structure of qualifying rounds would differ based largely on confederation size and logistics.

World Cup Hosting

Uruguay was the first host in 1930. Choosing the W.C. host was always a significant event, especially after there was initial controversy over which continent the tournament was hosted on. Since 1958, FIFA decided to alternate hosting between the Americas and Europe. Hosts were decided several years beforehand by a voting at the FIFA Congress.

So far, the only countries that have hosted the event outside of Europe and South America are Mexico (1970 & 1986), USA (1994), Japan and South Korea (2002), and South Africa (2010). Japan and South Korea were the first nations to jointly host the quadrennial FIFA tournament. South Africa will become the first African nation to host the World Cup in 2010. Currently, allocation takes place on a rotation basis between confederations with the FIFA Executive voting to determine which country hosts the World Cup.

World Cup Draw

Currently, the draw takes place with 8 seeded teams selected to head each group from A to H. The seeding is based on FIFA Rankings and past performance at World Cups. The hosts automatically become a seeded team as well. The other teams are placed into pots, but they are not assigned randomly. Since 1998, FIFA has ensured that two teams from the same confederation are not in the same group. The draw also ensures that there are not more than two European teams per group.

Even though the W.C. is a global event, it is the preserve of European and South American teams. Apart from the hosting of the tournament being dominated by the two confederations, they have monopolised the win column and appearances in the semi-finals and finals. Of the 18 tournaments held between 1930 and 2006, South American teams have won 9 to Europe's 9. Individually, Brazil leads with 5, Italy (4), Germany (3), Argentina and Uruguay (2), England and France (1).

Of the 36 possible final appearances since 1930, the final has included a team outside winners' row only 7 times (four European countries). Even though the title contenders are few, the individual skill, team character and passion displayed on the global stage makes this the most anticipated and watched sporting event. After all, the World Cup has been the playground of soccer legends like Pele, Maradona and Beckenbauer.

FIFA (Federation of Association Football) - A Little History

FIFA (or Federation de Football Association - that is, Federation of Association Football) is the governing body of international soccer. It was created in Paris, France, on May 21, 1904, for the improvement of the sport. The foundation act was signed by delegates from France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and Spain. Two days after its foundation, the organization met in its first Congress, where Robert Guerin of France was elected as president..

In 1906, FIFA hosted the first international soccer competition ever. It wasn't very successful, though. This, coupled with failing economics, led to Guerin's replacement by Daniel Burley Woolfall, an Englishman. Under Woolfall's direction, FIFA's participation in the 1908 Olympics fared much better than the organization's first attempt. At first, only European nations were in the federation. In 1909, however, South Africa joined, followed three years later by Argentina and Chile, then one year later by the USA and Canada. Then World War I hit hard.

During World War I, FIFA faltered, with many players being sent off to war, and the price of international travel rising so far. By the end of the first World War, in 1921, there were only 20 nations in the organization. The United Kingdom countries (England, Scotland, and Ireland) pulled out of the federation, saying that they didn't want to compete against or participate with their former World War enemies. At the end of Jules Rimet's (the third FIFA president) 33 year presidency, however, FIFA boasted a participation of 85 members. The United Kingdom countries returned, thanks to Rimet's wonderful diplomatic skills. He retired at the age of 80.

A Belgian, Rodolphe William Seeldrayers, became the organization's fourth president. Under his rule, FIFA celebrated its 50 year anniversary. When he died in 1955, Arthur Drewry became the federation's fifth president. During his presidency, the 6th World Cup in Stockholm went well. He ruled until he died in 1961, at 70 years old. Ernst B. Thommen, a Swiss, was not the 6th president. Instead, he ruled from the position as Chairman of FIFA's Organizing Committee, and things went well. Sir Stanley Rous was the sixth president. Things went well for FIFA again, especially financially. In 1974, Dr. Joao Havelange, a Brazilian, became president. He ushered in a new era for soccer and FIFA, and the organization became more of an enterprise, striving to better the sport, rather than just an organization trying to meet and maintain the status quo.

In 1998, when Joseph S. Blatter of Switzerland became president, FIFA had reached almost full globalization. Today, FIFA organizes and maintains the prestigious soccer World Cup, which is coveted by countless of soccer players around the world. FIFA also organizes and maintains several other prestigious cups, including the Women's World Cup, and the Jules Rimet Cup. FIFA also helps with the Olympics. There are yearly FIFA World Cup video games sold everywhere in the developed world, and, as the organization's motto says, FIFA strives to make the entire sport the best it can be.

World Cup Trivia

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be a ball! Each year, the best soccer squads from every corner of the globe compete in the biggest sporting event on Earth. This year, the tournament will take place in South Africa, from June 11th to July 11th. Here are some fascinating facts about the tournament taking place this year and yesteryear:

1. The official 2010 World Cup Mascot is named Zakumi.

Zakumi is a humanized leopard with green hair. The name is a blend of South Africa's international abbreviation (ZA) and the word "kumi". In several African languages, the word "kumi" translates into English as the number ten. The mascot's colors, yellow and green, are also present in the center of South Africa's flag. Zakumi's birthday is on the South African red letter day: Youth Day. Also, Zakumi's birth date (1994) signifies South Africa's first nationwide elections that were non-racial.

2. Only two World Cups will have been outside the Americas and Europe.

The exceptions were in 2002 (South Korea/Japan), and in 2010 (South Africa).

3. Europe and South America have dominated the Event.

In fact, European countries have won the tournament nine times, while South American countries have also won it a total of nine times. Interestingly, a European country has never become a World Cup champion in one played outside of Europe. Unless you've lived your entire life under a rock, then you likely know that Brazil is one of the world's soccer powerhouses. So it's not surprising that the country has won a record five World Cup championships. But Italy is closed behind, with four championships of its own. Germany (West) is next, with a total of three World Cup titles. Meanwhile, Uruguay and Argentina both have a pair of championships. And finally, England and France have each won the tournament once.

4. The youngest and oldest players were 17 and 42 yeas old, respectively.

The youngest World Cup player was Norman Whiteside (Ireland), who was a mere 17 years/41 days old when he played in 1982. Meanwhile, Roger Milla (Cameroon) was 42 years/39 days old when he took the filed in 1994.

5. The top all-time World Cup scorer was a Frenchman.

In 1958, Just Fontaine of France scored a whopping 13 points during the tournament, averaging slightly over two points per game. The second all-time scorer was Sandor Kocsis of Hungary. Hungry for goals, in 1954 he scored 11 total points during the tournament, in five games. And the third all-time top scorer was Gerd Muller of West Germany. In 1970 he scored 10 points during six games.

6. Two players have scored in four consecutive World Cup finals.

Interestingly, both players scored during the same World Cups. Pele (Brazil) and Uwe Seeler (West Germany) both scored in the finals of 1958, 1962, 1966, and 1970.

As always, the 2010 Tournament will be a thrilling event. Besides watching the heart-pounding action on the soccer field, keep an eye on the record books to see if any records are broken.

Surprise! The U.S. Government Wants More Fuel Efficient Vehicles

After several years of skyrocketing gas prices, alarming new reports about the dangers of global warning, and a seemingly endless debate in congress concerning U.S. energy policy, it appears as if the federal government finally may be seriously considering a mandate that would require increased mileage standards for American vehicles. It's cause for some optimism, but observers aren't ready to rejoice quite yet. Recently, President Bush urged congress to give him the authority to raise federal fuel economy standards for passenger vehicles. That may sound like an encouraging sign, but that fact is that the president has had the power to raise those standards from the very beginning. In fact, every president since 1975 has had that power, granted when the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards were put into place, beginning with Gerald Ford. Most observers of the industry believe that American vehicles should easily be able to average 40 mpg within ten years. The technology already exists to make that figure possible, so there's no reason why the standards couldn't be raised immediately to help lessen the hit the average American consumer took when gas prices tripled. Raising the mileage standard to 40 mpg, which is the minimum increase suggested by most observers, would save the average American driver more than $5,000 over the lifetime of their vehicle. Those savings are over and above any added cost that would be required to make vehicles more fuel efficient, and would equate to a savings of $600 a year to the average driver. If even a minimal standard of 40 mpg was implemented (and prizes such as the new Auto X Prize will be soon be encouraging entrepreneurs to invent vehicles that will get double, triple, or quadruple that figure), Americans could save as much as 4,000,000 barrels of oil every day. That figure represents more than entire daily amount of oil that America currently imports from the Persian Gulf. There would be some safety considerations involved in creating a new class of vehicles, since they might need to be smaller than what is currently being offered, at least in the initial stages. However, as hybrid technology improves, it's entirely possible that vehicles could remain about the same size as current models without sacrificing mileage to any significant degree. The key will be for automobile designers to begin thinking creatively, which has been something American automakers haven't done well for quite some time, even in the face of a growing demand for more fuel efficient vehicles. We can only hope that President Bush isn't simply posturing about raising fuel standards to prop up his sagging support numbers from the American public. After all, it would seem as if he'd have to know that he already has the power to raise mileage standards without having to go to congress to ask for permission. Meanwhile, supporters of increased fuel efficiency can only sit back and wait to see if anything substantial comes from this latest development on Capitol Hill. Copyright © 2006 Jeanette J. Fisher

The History of Soccer

Soccer is world's most famous sport and is mainly thought to be invented by British. The game in fact has been played in different styles throughout civilized history.

The early Japanese played a game similar to soccer and was also similar to the American style football back in 1000 BC. There is not too much information available about this game except that the ball was round and large being kicked between two teams playing in a small field.

A game was developed in China known as 'cuju', it had a ball that was filled with feathers and hair and was kicked between two teams required to get the ball through a small ring. Cuju was continuously played for nearly 2000 years and it died in 1600s.

The Chinese version of the game was famous in Korea and Japan. Many historians suggest that soccer during the renaissance period may have been influenced by Asian games. The Romans also played a type of football that was more exactly described as a cross between rugby and soccer but it had a lot of brutality.

In Europe, air filled bags were known probably before since 100 BC as they were a type of ball used in Roman game called 'follis'. This was very much similar to modern rugby than soccer.

During the middle ages in Europe, a type of soccer was banned in England many times for being public annoyance and dangerous. It was closely linked to a Roman game called harpastum known as mob football.

Soccer hooliganism is globally dealt with in modern game, it was also felt in England back in 1300s and 1600s. The game was banned many times because of the unruly behavior of players.

Some local Australian tribes used to play a game of football involving the leading player to kick a ball in to the air for other players to catch. Although this is not closely related with modern soccer but it can be seen that ball sports and games were invented by almost every society and they are not Chinese or Greco-Roman invention.

The history of modern soccer is definitely in England. The name soccer comes from the word association. The Cambridge rules were written in 1848 allowing some most famous schools of England to compete with each other under common rules. The the Football Association partly used these rules in 1863.

As professional soccer developed with the formation of leagues, it provided a competitive playing environment which turned soccer into a sport viewed by spectators.

Major soccer leagues founded in Brazil, UK, Italy, Germany and other nations encouraged the culture of clubs and international teams around the world. It is so popular that the World Cup is watched live on TV by millions of people around the globe. Nowadays, national teams play soccer championships and over the last fifty years, FIFA World Cup has come to dominate as international soccer championship. FIFA World Cup games have achieved great number of crowds and also television viewing numbers were in billions over the duration of the competition.

The first FIFA Club World Cup was held in 2000 and this event is gaining fame and promoting soccer throughout the world. Corinthians of Brazil won the first FIFA Club World Cup.

FIFA World Cup 2010 - Spain Vs Switzerland Preview

Favorites Spain are p against a stolid Switzerland in a group H at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Wednesday. In 18 previous meetings between the sides, Spain have won 15, with the others ending in draws. The teams last met in 1994.

Spain will try to shed the tag of underperformers at this World Cup. In 2006, they flattered to deceive, and got out in the pre-quarter-final.  In the interim, they won the Euro 2008 championship and have since shown a calm maturity that was previously absent.

European Champions Spain made a clean sweep of 10 qualification matches. The Confederations Cup loss to USA has been the only disappointment for the team since the Euro 2008 campaign.

Manager Vicente Del Bosque has a wealth of talent to choose his Spanish team from. Their open game with smooth passes and change of pace make Spain the team to watch. They are fluent with short and long passes, and also excel in set play situations.

The in form David Villa is a prolific goal scorer and the Swiss would want Arsenal's Senderos to mark Villa, and keep him quiet. Silva and Iniesta are pacy wingers for Spain and the perfect foil for Xavi and Fabregas. Midfielder Xavi Spain's hero of Euro 2008 is likely to orchestrate Spain's action by feeding Torres and Villa. Switzerland are likely to try and counter Xavi using Benjamin Huggel to keep him in check. If Torres fails to start owing to injury, David Villa is likely to carry the onus of attack alone.

In contrast, the Swiss are a defensive outfit. They have a motley crew of young and old players and are very assiduous on the field.  Switzerland also had a decent qualification run, winning a place in the World Cup finals for the second time in succession.

Switzerland have an accomplished manager in Ottmar Hitzfeld who has led two different teams to the Champions League title. Hitzfeld.will be looking to Alexander Frei and Tranquillo Barnetta to score goals, with Phillipe Senderos leading the defence. Switzerland's Barnetta who excels in crosses from left of midfield will be up against Ramos of Spain, in another battle worth watching. Ramos is likely to have the assistance of Capdevilla in defence.  Hitzfeld might choose to have an additional midfielder to try and blunt Spain's attacking edge.

Spain are likely to dominate this game with the ball in their possession during most of the game's duration. For Switzerland, a draw would be the equivalent of a win.
