How the Ultimate World Cup 2010 Spreadsheet Came to Be

In 2006 I stumbled across an incredible spreadsheet just before the World Cup in Germany. It was attractive, slick, and very easy to use. Tracking the progress of teams through the World Cup became a lot more enjoyable, no even riveting.

Fast forward four years... along comes World Cup 2010 in South Africa. I contacted the original author of the Ultimate Couch Potato World Cup 2006 Spreadsheet to see if he was going to do an update. The answer was "No, it takes much to much time, but you can take it over if you wish." Well, to make a long story short, I took over the project, but in the course of asking questions about functionality the original author became involved again! Yay! After 3 weeks we had it finished, albeit still a bit rough.

Unfortunately we also had to redo the website completely (in terms of visual effect, not content), and then find ways to publicize it.

What makes this spreadsheet unique among World Cup spreadsheets? Well, it is really the only one in its niche. This Excel Spreadsheet has 7 pages and is 1.8 megabytes. Smaller spreadsheets exist, but they are only one page, looking cramped and gaudy. Then there are a couple of well known larger ones 8 to 12 megabytes. These have another problem - they are overkill. There is so much extraneous information that one can page through that one looses sight of the goal (almost literally!). They also have not learned anything about user-friendliness and visual appeal. I find using these irksome and annoying. Finally, the spreadsheet that we created uses only formulas. It has no macros or VBA programming, so there is no chance of getting a virus from it.

One of the labour intensive features is a set of unique comments for each match. There are 7 basic comments - for when team A beats team B by 1,2,or 3+ goals, when they tie, and when B beats A by 1, 2 or 3+ goals. Seven times 48 games is 336 comments. However, things are a lot more complicated then they seem. Virtually every comment has additional options in it - depending whether the tie is 0-0 (no goals scored) or 1-1 (where some goals are scored). We also take into consideration when teams are eliminated and who they have to play next in their group. This makes over 1000 permutations for the group stage comment section. Whew!

Will this spreadsheet be continued in for the 2014 world cup? We'll have to wait and see. We may need more help with doing this.

South Africa World Cup Prediction of Games - Sunday 27 June Afternoon Game - Germany Vs USA

The Winner of Group D will take on the Runner up of Group C.

Group C contains England, USA, Algeria and Slovenia. I predict that England will top the group, and in second place it will be the USA.

Group D contains Germany, Australia, Serbia and Ghana. I predict that Germany will come in first and Australia will be second.

The afternoon game at 15:00 will see Germany play USA. What a games this will prove to be. Germany winner of the world cup three times in 1954, 1974 and 1990. They will certainly look to impress this time round after performing so well in the 2006 World cup in Germany. Michael Ballack, the German captain will have to be in outstanding form for Germany to achieve any success like in 2006. Having a near 1 in 2 goal per game ratio he is certainly one of the best attacking midfielder on show at this years world cup. Landon Donovan is USA star player.

Having a recent successful spell in the English Premiership he will be looking to take that form in to the world cup finals. This will be a tight game, I can see one goal in it. The USA have long since improved since the early days of soccer as they call it in 1994. Soccer is a huge under 10 sport amongst boys and girls and is played by millions. In the next 10 years I am sure that the USA will reach a world cup final. This is probably a tournament too soon, look out for them in 2014 in South America! I predict Germany to win in 90 minutes by 1-0.

Spanish Famous Soccer Players

Soccer is the most popular sport in Spain. The Spain soccer team is a superior team and has produced the famous Spanish soccer players for years. As a national team, Spain was not able to achieve any success in FIFA world cup except the 1998 world cup. The team reached the quarterfinal stage by winning eight matches. This was only the best impressive performance in FIFA games where they lost to France. Spain participated in eleven world cups and it was ranked number four in 1950.

Though superior, the world cup squad never gave good results. The famous Spanish soccer players are Luis Suarez, Raul Gonzalez Blanco, Kubala, Alfredo Di Stefano, and the goalkeeper Zamora. Also, Michel, Santillana, and Butragueno are the rising stars of Spanish national team. Most interestingly, the world famous Spanish clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona have provided Spanish soccer with best world famous players. The Spanish clubs are more popular around the world and let us have a look at few big names.

Raul Gonzalez Blanco was born in Madrid, Spain on June 27, 1977. On the club level, Raul as a member of Real Madrid is the most impressive soccer player who was responsible for the victory in Champions League in 1998. Again, in 2002, he was the leading player who allowed Real Madrid to win the Champions league. He was a real hero in the whole tournament and scored the famous two goals that turned the whole situation of the game.

The famous Spanish soccer players include names of world famous goalkeepers. Ricardo Zamora was named as the best goalkeeper in 1958. The place of Zamora has remained unchallenged and not a single goalkeeper in Spain is able to reach his height. He is the greatest goalkeeper produced by Spain and played with the national team for more than 46 occasions. Also, he played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid. Spain has managed to provide steady goalkeepers like Luis Arconada and Andoni Zubizarreta. Edson Arantes Do Nascimento also nicked as Pele, is regarded as one of the famous Spanish soccer players of all time.

Most of the star players from around the world are involved in the famous Spanish soccer players list. The players signed by Real Madrid include big names such as Roberto Carlos, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Robinho, and so on. To add on the world famous Barcelona soccer club granted Spanish nationality to Brazilian world famous player Ronaldinho and Mexican player Giovani.

The world cup winning captain of Argentina, Diego Maradona is related to world famous Spanish club Barcelona. The other famous players related to Barcelona club are Marcelo Trobbiani, Alberto Acosta, Marcelo Saralegui, Nicolas Hernandez, etc. Barcelona club from Spain is considered to be one of the top 10 clubs in the world.

Though the Spain soccer national team is not successful on international level, the Spanish soccer has got great respect on world sports platform. The Spanish soccer has great future and the list of famous Spanish soccer players is definitely going to rise in coming years.

FIFA World Cup Lead Up: Maradona Allows Wives, Girl Friends

According to Argentine team doctor Donato Villani, sex forms part of everyone's social life and in itself is not a problem. The good doctor spoke these words in defence of Maradona's decision to allow girl friends and wives to accompany the Argentine players to the World Cup.

However, the doctor clarified that it had to be with a stable partner, and that the players should avoid "additives" like champagne or Viagra.

Brazil President Lula Da Silva was critical of the lax atmosphere in the Argentine camp, noting that Maradona was allowing his players access to their wives and girl friends.Lula went on record as saying that he wanted to see the Argentines arrive staggering and exhausted to their games.

In news about England's team preparations ahead of the event in South Africa, Joe Cole expects to feature in England's opening match against the United States.

Cole, 28, recently came back in a friendly against Japan, from a knee injury that kept him out of the game for nearly two years.

The Chelsea midfielder is yet to get a regular place in the club side. Following his come back. Cole never considered his injury as career threatening, though he did not expect to recover in time for the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Portugal's prospects have suffered a blow;Nani is out of the World Cup following a collar bone injury suffered in training in Lisbon.

Nani, 23, played brilliantly for Manchester United in the 2009/10 season, and was a likely star for Portugal in this year's World Cup. Benfica midfielder Ruben Amorim will replace Nani in the Portugal squad.

Ivory Coast are arguably the strongest African contingent at the forthcoming event in South Africa. But their performance could suffer in the absence of their star striker Didier Drogba.

Drogba is undergoing surgery at the Lindenhof hospital in Berne, and everyone is hopeful of his speedy recovery, after an injury resulting from a collision with Japan's Tanaka, in a match in Sion, Switzerland.

African Player of the Year, Drogba helped Chelsea to the Premier League and FA Cup Double with his 37 goals, last season.

Ivory Coast's showing in the world Cup is completely dependent on Drogba's recovery. Ivory Coast is in the 'group of death' with Brazil, Portugal and North Korea. Ivory Coast is the strongest of the five African teams at the World Cup, and quite capable of causing an upset in group G.

In news relating to another African team's lead up to the Cup, Ghana right-back John Pantsil is optimistic of his team entering the World Cup semi-final. Pantsil who plays for Fulham in the EPL feels an Arican team could become the champion, this year.

Ghana had a brilliant run at the last edition, in 2006, where they beat the USA and Czech Republic, to enter the knock-out round, where they lost to Brazil.

The Black Stars are in Group D a tricky group that has Germany, Australia and Serbia. Ghana will take on Serbia, in their first game, on 13 June in Pretoria.

Messi Becomes Barca's Highest Paid Player

Barca's president, Joan Laporta, was thrilled to make the deal official, "Leo should be the highest paid player in the squad. He deserves it. He's the best player in the world and one of the best in football history. He's content and that's why he's playing the way he is". Leo joined Barca as a youth team player back in 2001 during which he won a host of trophies. He also played a leading role in the club's recent unprecedented title treble - the Primera Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League. Scoring 38 goals in the three competitions, and helping with 16 assists, Messi is now a popular choice to succeed Cristiano Ronaldo as FIFA World Player of the Year this December.

The striker's contract with Barca was to expire in 2014, but he signed a new one that keeps him with the club until 2016, which will probably be the best years in his career. Ending all speculation, Leo claimed, "I want to spend all my career here, in Barcelona, if it's possible. I would love to finish at Barcelona. This contract is a result of everything that happened last year and of what I have done since coming into the first team. I am simply one more person in this spectacular group of players, where there is a team that is very nice, very united and in which I am simply part of continuing to win things". According to the new deal, Messi's release clause increases from 150million Euros to 250million Euros.

Laporta declared, "This is the best news Barca can receive today. It is important to have a player with his human qualities and his football ability. This deal recognizes all that he gives to Barcelona. It is impossible to imagine the team without a player like Messi. We expect Leo to retire here with Barca." This announcement was expected for some time now and coach Pep Guardiola joined in to express his delight, "It's an immense piece of news for the club and for the player that Messi is renewing his contract, as it also was when Victor Valdes and Xavi did so. People go to football to see the best and that's what they are. It's a privilege for Barca to have some of the best footballers like Messi."

Next on the club president's list is captain Carles Puyol, whose services he also hopes to retain at Camp Nou. There have been rumors that the captain is not too happy ever since Barca acquired Ukrainian defender, Dmytro Chygrynskiy. Laporta asserted, "I am convinced that Puyol is keen to end his career at Barca. But I also understand that a player of his age examines the possibility of having an experience outside of Spain." Let's see how the cookie crumbles over the next couple of months.

Fifa World Cup 2006 Germany - The Party of the Century!

Would you too like to make new friends, experience a delightful time as well as participate to parties day in and day out? Well, then let's travel to Germany to the Fifa World Cup 2006!

The Fifa World Cup 2006 Germany will become the biggest party of the century. Official start is June 9th, 2006, but the party already begins with an opening ceremony in Olympic Stadium in Berlin Germany at June 8th. By the way, this is the first time an opening party will be held starting a football/soccer World Cup.

Germany will host the Fifa World Cup 2006 till July 9th, 2006.

New stadiums have been built specifically for the World Cup. I guide you through these twelve German cities on my website and give you some insider tips on where to go before and after the matches.

The stadiums with its games are quite gripping, but the cities have a lot more to offer as well! So it's a very good idea to travel through Germany by train once you are there. And after the matches... the party goes on in and around the main stations as well.

Well, it is going to be a time to make friends! Definitely.

However, at first I am going to let you know about something very important to keep you away from disappointment.

It is regarding the ticket purchase process. The Organizing Committee want to make sure only friendly and peace-loving people enter the stadiums. That is why they personalize all tickets.

Yes, you are not allowed anymore to sell tickets. Buying tickets is solely allowed on their official website.

So I am sure you think of buying tickets for one or more matches. Here is what Horst Schmidt, Vice-President of our Organizing Committee says:

"A supply of tickets came up for resale on eBay. All we can do is warn people to steer well clear of such offers. Fans obtaining tickets in this way may find themselves denied admission at the turnstiles. Everyone knows that tickets are personalised and cannot be transferred without a genuinely pressing reason, and then only with the Organising Committee's approval. There could be problems if the ticket and personal ID fail to match, exactly as there would be with an airline ticket. We've said it often enough before, and we're saying it again: tickets are only transferable for good reasons - and profiteering isn't a good reason."

So make sure you only apply for tickets online at their official website. That way you avoid massive disappointment.

Good.

Already before the assignment on April 16th, 2002, for seven cities it was clear they are going to host matches:

Berlin -- it's Germany's capital so an absolute must
Munich -- that is the homeland of the Organising Committee President Franz Beckenbauer; also the most beautiful one.
Stuttgart -- this is the headquarter of the sponsor DaimlerChrysler and homeland of the DFB President Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder
Leipzig -- actually the birth city of the DFB (German Football Federation)
Dortmund -- actually the largest stadium after Berlin and Munich
Gelsenkirchen -- this is a highly praised arena and a new building; it even contains a removable lawn! Amazing!li>
Hamburg -- the metropolis of the north.

The remaining five Fifa World Cup 2006 Germany venues are Cologne, Frankfurt, Hanover, Kaiserslautern and Nuremberg.

All twelve venues were extended and modernized or again/new built respectively, so that the most modern play places of the world are going to be used with the Fifa World Cup 2006 Germany.

Now, I wish you a wonderful journey to Germany and a lot of fun during the upcoming Fifa World Cup 2006 Germany.

Make sure, however, you book your hotel room now! Some nearby hotels are already booked up...

Warmest regards,

Marcus Hochstadt

FIFA 11 - A Whole New World Cup Experience

Soccer has been the world's most popular sports and has the largest fans following across the planet. Almost every continent stages different well-known leagues such as the English League, Spanish and American League. The FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup is known to be the most prestigious tournament in the world of soccer which takes place once every four years. It has been known to be the largest gathering of soccer teams all over the world. There are 119 participating soccer-enthusiast countries that compete with each other to become the best soccer team in the world.

FIFA World Cup 2010 which had taken place in South Africa has long been over and everybody had a great time of their lives cheering for their favorite soccer teams. However, soccer enthusiasts all over the planet still cannot get over with the FIFA World Cup fever and with fans that cannot even wait for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil; the FIFA 11 will soon be launched.

FIFA 11 like the FIFA 10 is a soccer game and it's already the 19th title in the FIFA series of video games by Electronic Arts of EA Canada. This would be one of the sought-after association football video game series that was rumored to be released on September 2010.

With this newest FIFA Football 11, gamers will soon experience a major reinvention on the authenticity of players whether it is on and off the ball. It has a new feature called Personality+ that allows lucid differentiations of players and it also sees the characters individual abilities to make it look like their favorite player is really kicking and running on the football field. Another breakthrough of this game is that it has a very sophisticated database that can distinguish players from one another. Each player is programmed to have over 36 skill-set attributes and 57 traits and these can all be evaluated and scored by the database.

The FIFA 11 also introduces a cool feature that determines the pass accuracy through the gamers' controlling ability on the pad and the unique skills that the player has. This feature is called the Pro Pass. It also yields a very rewarding passing system. Moreover, the gamer can also play as Manager, Player or the newest addition is the Player Manager because the Manager mode which was a feature on some previous FIFA Football Series has been replaced with the Career Mode.

Even if soccer aficionados' favorite players are now strutting their dribbling and running skills on the different major leagues such the Premier League in United Kingdom or La Liga de Espanya in Spain, soccer fans still can have a World Cup experience with the new FIFA 11 Football series with Personality+ and Pass Pro features.

South Korea - The Olympic Revolution of the New Millennium

I -Eva Peron, Korea and the Olympics
Before Korea became one of the most industrialized nations on the entire Asian continent, Argentina -it is about 26 times the size of SK- was one of the world's six richest countries. Around the same time, they were getting off on the right foot in the Olympic Games.

Argentina -now a football-loving nation- was home to sixty percent of Latin America's Olympic winners-aquatics, boxing, polo, rowing, track-field. At the 1948 London Games, they finished 13th in the medal standings. In contrast to its neighbours, Argentina had an Olympic champ to cheer in that year , when Delfo Cabrera won a gold medal. On that occasion, Korea was certainly not lucky, and finished 32nd in the medal table. Korea's first Olympic national team was formed in the late 40s. But Koreans dare to dream the impossible.

At the 1951 Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, the host country finished first in the count medal- where America was ousted from the number one spot for the first time in Continental Games history by Argentina.

But Argentina is now history. In the last Olympics, the Latin American nation only won two golds-soccer & cycling. Ironically, Argentina-where there are snow-mountains- has never won an Olympic medal in the Winter Games. Then, in April 2009, the Bolivian men's soccer squad upset team Argentina, which was trained by soccer player-turned-coach Diego Armando Maradona, 6-1.

Different from Argentina, Japan, Australia and Canada, SK is ranked among the five best Olympic teams, along with China, America, Russia and Germany. This superb team is a paradigm on Earth.

Korea expects to send about 50 champs to the XXI Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada. The country's athletic rulers also expect to send 250 champs to the London 2012 Olympics.

II-A Small Nation With A Big Ambition
From my perspective I think that South Korea is the most successful Olympic nation in history. Now SK became a source of inspiration for many Olympic countries around the world. Certainly, it is a role model for small countries -from Austria to Brunei Darussalam- and multiparty States -e.g. India, Taiwan, Chile, Peru, Argentina.

The Republic of Korea, also known as South Korea, is about the size of Indiana. More than 49 million people live there-it is not far off the total in Ukraine. Unlike Venezuela-it has had the benefit of high oil prices, Peru and Angola, Korea has few natural resources. This nation does not have oil, diamonds, gold, silver, zinc, gas, and uranium.

But in the last decades of the 20th century, the Korean State introduced an industrialization program and expand education. The rulers devoted more than 20 percent of its national budget to the development human-education, culture, welfare, sports. Now SK has one of the world's strongest economies.

III-The Difficult Years
In the 1940s and 1950s, SK was a war-torn nation-World War II and Korean War. Because of this, it became one of the world's poorest nations. After World War II ended 35 years of Japanese domination and Korea gained its independence (1948).

From 1950 to '53 nearly three million Koreans died. On the other hand, there were, 500,000 Koreans living overseas. In the following decades Korea was governed by military warlords. In the 1990s SK became a democratic nation.

IV- A Nation of Sports Lovers
During the 1960s and 1970s, the rule introduced many sports reforms -a strong emphasis on physical education into educational system- and did many things to improve sporting life in the nation-an official policy that continued in the 1990s and 2000s. In just a few years, they also promoted the sports that were not well-known in the country.

Success came slowly at first. The number of Asian awards increased from around 27 in 1958 to more than 65 in 1978. From 1964 to '76, the country's champs earned 12 Olympic medals. Another example, Korea's boxers, led by Moon Sung-Kil, won many global titles in the 1980s.

Unlike Cuba -which had a lot of coaches from the USSR, East Germany, Bulgaria, North Korea and Poland- SK did not have foreign coaches. All its Olympic awards were produced by Korean coaches.

To support Seoul's bid to host the 1988 Olympics, the Korean chairmans hosted many international events -the 1979 Shooting World Championships, the 1982 Baseball World Cup, the 1982 Boxing Global Championships and the Korea Cup (volleyball)-and built world-class stadiums.

V- The Boycott Against South Korea
During Cold War, especially between 1950 and 1985, Korea was an isolated Olympic nation. This Asian country was considered an international pariah by the World Marxist and several anti-American states (Korea became a UN member in 1991).

The 1979 Seoul FIBA Women's World Championships were boycotted by the Soviet Union and its allies. Three years later, Cuba's boxers, world & Olympic champions, were not allowed to compete in the World Cup by Fidel Castro. That same year, Cuba also did not send baseball players to the World Championships in South Korea.

In 1986 North Korea boycotted the Asian Games. The Democratic People' s Republic of Korea refused to send champs to SK. Subsequently, the XXIV Seoul Summer Olympic Games were boycotted by seven nations-Albania, Cuba, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Nicaragua, North Korea, and Seychelles. However, the sports officials sent several champs to Moscow, Varna, Havana and Prague.

VI - Seoul Olympic Games- A Gold Medal for Korea
During the IOC Session in Germany in 1981, Seoul was selected as host country for the 1988 Summer Olympics, and began a new era for the country's sports development. Seoul beat Nagoya, Japan's city. That decision caused surprise around the world.

Thirty-eight years ago, Seoul had been destroyed by Korean War, but it had been rebuilt in record time. In the '70s and early '80s, Seoul was a successful host to several international tournaments.

The IOC awarded Seoul the Olympics by a margin of 15 votes. Kim Un-Yong -one of the world's best Olympic czars- was a key figure behind South Korea's bid to host the 1988 Summer Olympics. He was runner-up when Jacques Rogge was elected IOC chairman.

SK, an anti-Marxist state in the 20th century, did not have full diplomatic ties with the World Soviet-which had won the last three Olympics- and the People's Republic of China-the new Olympic member. Moscow could have boycotted the Games in South Korea.

Secondly, Korea was not a multiparty-state on the Asian region. In 1980, a demonstration organized by the pro-democratic groups turned into the bloody riot known as the "Kwangju Massacre". In 1974 South Korea's First Lady had been assassinated. Some time later, ruler Park Chung Hee was killed by the head of South Korea CIA in Seoul.

At the 24th Summer Games, SK won 12 gold medals and was one of the four best sports teams on the planet.

The Opening ceremony was spectacular. The next day, the photos were seen all over the world and from that moment the name Korea was known everywhere. Meanwhile, representatives from 159 countries attended the Olympics, including the USSR and China.

Seoul'88 was a political-blow to the Communist Movement. The Kremlin sent 514 champs to the 1988 Games. That travel had the blessing of the Soviet regime, which had boycotted the Summer Olympics in the States in 1984. Then, more than 290 champs -e.g Petra Felke, Heike Drechsler, Kristin Otto- were sent by the East German warlords- a landslide victory for the Korean chairmans. But there were other friends too: The Vietnamese rule allowed champs from Vietnam to attend the Summer Games. Certainly, sports was an important diplomatic tool for Korea.

VII- Democracy & Sports
In the country's first multiparty presidential election, in December 1992, Kim Young Sam -a passionate human-rights advocate-, was elected, and the Asian nation returned to civilian rule. It was a watershed moment.

Now South Korea is one of the most outstanding democracies -human development and democracy- in Asia and a role model for several post-dictatorship states. From then on, Korea has one of the world's most ambitious educational projects-many young people study more than 11 hours.

Under the new democratic rulers, SK has reinforced its sporting system. Certainly they wanted to be the centre of excellence in Asia. The Olympic Korean team surprised the world when it emerged as a "new world power" in the 21st century. On the other hand, the country staged successful 2002 World Cup and 2003 World University Games.

In the two-year period between the 2006 Winter Games and 2008 Summer Olympics, Korea won 42 awards (19 golds, 13 silvers, 10 bronzes) and finished five in the unofficial team standings, behind China, Russia, Germany and the U.S. Korea's delegation was backed up by President Roh Moo-Hyn. In addition to the Olympic and world titles, South Korea has won several Asian gold medals. They competed with 45 countries in the Olympic-type Asian Games.

Before the 1992 Winter Olympic Games, Korea had not won any medal. Without the sporting tradition of Czechoslovakia and Sweden, Korea has more Winter Olympic medals than Spain and Japan. For this reason, the government lent its support to a bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics. In Guatemala City, Pyongchang was only beaten for the Winter Games by Sochi (Russia).

VIII- From Archery to Wrestling
Since the 2000s Korea is powerhouse in aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, handball, judo, shooting, short-track, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, and other sports.

Archers With Olympic Honours
Korea has produced world-beating archers in recent years. From 1984 to 2008 they have won 16 gold medals. The country's archers, inspired by Seo Hyang-Soon, won 3 of the 4 events at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

Athletics-Fusion of Past, Present and Future
In the first half of the 20th century, two Koreans, Suh Yun Bok & Ham Kee Yong, won the Boston Marathon. In 2001 Bong-Ju Lee became the first non-African to win the Boston Marathon since 1991. The country's marathon runner Hwang Young-Cho - one of Korea's most well-known champs- claimed a gold medal at the 25th Summer Olympics in Spain. Hwang is the second sportsman from an Asian nation to win an event in this competition. Korean-born Kijung Son won the Olympic title in 1936. At the Berlin 1936 Games, he had been forced to run in the colors of the occupying Japanese forces.

Badminton-Stage of Stars
Since 1985 SK became one of the world's best teams. Lee Yong-Dae and Lee Hyo-Jung defeated Lilyana Natsir and Nova Widianto (Indonesia) in the mixed doubles final at the China Summer Olympics in 2008. Korea placed first at the 1996 Olympic Badminton Tournament in the States-it collected two gold and silver medals.

Baseball- SK vs Cuba
Baseball has come a long away in South Korea. Its greatest year was 2008, when Korea won the gold at the Beijing Olympic Games, beating Cuba, former world champion (1984-2005). Eight years ago, they had earned a bronze medal in Sydney 2000. When the Games were opened in China, the States-2007 world champion- and Cuba were contending odds-on favorites.
The year 1982 was very happy for Korea too. That year they became the first Asian team to win a World Cup. The national team came close to winning the Global Championships in 2005.

Women's Basketball-Asian Superstar
Surprisingly SK was runner-up at the FIBA Women's World Cup in Czechoslovakia in the late 1960s.In 1979, Korea, host country, placed second at the Global Championships. They caused an upset in the second round of the World Cup by beating the favorite America (94-82). Four years later, Korea was one of the semi-finalist in the Universal Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil-behind the USSR, America and the People's Republic. But they did not stop there. The following year it earned silver at the Summer Olympic Games in California, USA. The team became the first women's basket team in Asia to win an Olympic award.

Fencing-New Olympic Awards
In 2000 Young Ho Kim lived up to reputation as one of the most popular Asian fencers by winning a gold medal at the Summer Games. He is the first fencer from an Asian country to win an Olympic title.

Field Hockey- A Major Asian Talent
In the past few decades, the Korean teams have won three Olympic silver medals. During this period of time, SK became the first Asian female team to qualify for the Olympic finals. The national men's team won silver at the 2000 Sydney Games and were fourth at the 2002 World Championships. In Australia they, spearheaded by Song Seung-Tae, defeated India (2-0), Poland (3-2), and Pakistan (1-0) before losing to the Netherlands (4-5). Amazing silver medal!

Women's Handball- Two Olympic Golds
This country is the only successful Asian team in the world. In 1984 they became the second Korean players in history to win a team Olympic medal at the Summer Games.

In 1988 Korea made history when it won the Olympic gold medal without ever having won a World Cup title. The national team, host country, became the first non-European handball team to win a global title in history. After the winning the Asian Tournament in 1990, Korea qualified for the 1992 Olympics and won its second Olympic medal in a row.

At its fourth Olympic appearance, they claimed silver medal at the 26th Olympiad-only Denmark could beat SK. During the 14th Asian Games in 2002, Korea won both the men's and women's handball tournaments. This sport was completely unknown in the 1960s.

Judo- A Gold Mine for Medals
From 1981 to 2007, Korea has won a total of 21 gold medals in the World Championships. At the 1996 Atlanta Games, the national team won seven judo medals (2 golds, 3 silvers, 2 bronzes), behind only Japan (8 awards). In 1981 Park Chung Hak became the first judoka in SK to win a world trophy.

Short-Track Speed Skating-New Olympic record!
SK is the only country to have 17 Olympic gold medals. At the 2006 Turin Winter Games, the national team dominated the medal table, with a total of 10 awards (6 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals).

Shooting-Surprises
In Barceolona'92 it earned two Olympic golds, Lee Eun Chol (men's free rifle) & Yeo Kab Soon (women's air rifle).

Soccer- Cha Bum-Kun, the Legend
According to Park Pil-Soon, Director of the Korean Olympic Committee, soccer is the most popular sport in the country. "The most popular sport in Korea these days is football. While baseball used to take the top spot in terms of popularity and the number of spectators in the past, football gained many fans after the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which we hosted with Japan. Korea advanced to the semifinals, which made us very excited about this sport".

In the early 80s, Korea placed fourth at the FIFA Junior World Cup and became the second Asian football team to qualify for the semi-finals in a global tournament.

They have qualified for the FIFA World Cup since 1986. At the 2002 Japan-South Korea, Cha Bum-Kun became one of the best football players on the planet. Korea has won five regional tournaments (two Asian Cups and three continental gold medals). At the 1948 Olympics in the UK, South Korea placed 8th.

Swimming- The Road to Bejing
Park Tae-Hwan became the first swimmer in SK to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games when he won the men's 400m freestyle at the 29th Summer Olympics in Beijing (China).Park's first major international success came at the 2007 FINA World Championships, where he won a gold medal. The Korean star is the country's pre-eminent sporting icon.

Table Tennis- A Traditional Sport
This sport is one of the oldest sports in the nation. In the early 1970s, Korea made history when it won a gold medal in the Global Tournament. Between 1987 and 1993 it also earned four world trophies.

Taekwondo-Unbeatable Records
Some famous taekwondo athletes have born in South Korea: Hwang Kyung-Seon, Kim Kyong-Hun, Lee Sun-Hee, and Moon Dae-Saung.

For many decades these athletes were unbeatable in the world. Korea has won more than 140 world titles (1975-2007). They have also dominated the Olympic Taekwondo Tournament. Since 2000 it has won nine golds.

Volleyball- A Strong National Team
This sport is one of the most popular in the country. In 1987 the national team claimed the FIVB Men's Junior World Championship in the Persian Gulf, and was the third Korean team to win a global title since 1977.

When they arrived in Manama, Bahrain's capital, the Korean team was not favorite. Some time later Korea defeated Brazil, which won the silver medal in 1984, 3-2 (19-17, 15-8, 6-15, 11-15, 15-12), at the Olympic Men's Volleyball Tournament. In the late 70s, Korea was semi-finalist at the World Championships in Italy. In the qualifying rounds, they defeated Poland, Olympic champion, 3-1 (15-7, 11-15, 16-14, 15-10).

The Korean women's national team have also won many international trophies. Between 1973 and 1977 they earned three world bronze medals.

Weightlifting- A Dark Horse
In 2006, Jang Mi-Ran, 2004 Olympic silver medalist, broke the world record in the + 75 kg category in the Middle East.
In the early 90s, Chun Byong Kwan, an unknown weightlifter, came to the Barcelona Games and won the Olympic trophy.

Wrestling-Heroes of the Games
Korea's wrestlers have a long tradition of winning awards. In the mid-60s, Sun Jang Chang earned a gold medal at the World Cup in the States. He became one of the first Koreans to win a global title. In the last decade of the 20th century, the national team won nine universal awards.

IX - Man Bok Park- A Superb Coach
Despite attractive offers from many nations, he remained in Peru. In the mid-1970s, Man Bok Park came to Lima and became one of the world's best coaches.

Led by Park, Peru was runner-up at the 1982 FIVB World Championships and silver medal at the 24th Summer Olympics. Korea's Man Bok Park became the first coach to lead a Latin American female team to the Olympic finals in 1988. In 1980 Cuba, Olympic's favorite, failed to qualify for the semi-finals at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Under the advice of Man Bok Park, the Peruvian women's volleyball squad defeated Brazil several times and won more than six South American Championships. After the Golden Age for Peru, country's volleyball team were never as successful again at the World Championships.

X -Young Wang Sonh's Legacy
But Man Bok Park was not alone! At the same time, the Argentine men's volleyball squad was trained by Young Wang Sonh. This South Korean is a pioneer of Argentina's volleyball.Young Wang Sonh led the South American team to win the bronze medal at the 1982 Global Championships.

He has become the most successful coach in the history of Argentine volleyball.

Today Argentina is producing an ever-increasing number of world-class coaches-Julio Velasco (Italy), Jon Uriarte (Argentina & Australia), Carlos Cardona (Puerto Rico), Marcelo R. Mendez (Spain), and Raúl Lozano (Poland).

Now That the 2010 World Cup is Over, What Next?

The 2010 FIFA world cup in South Africa has come and gone, and everyone's attention is now focused on the next host, Brazil. All satellites are now directed toward South America where the action would be, come 2014. Everyone expects Brazil to perform better than South Africa.

The expectations are quite high because Brazil is the home of football; in fact, football is a culture in the South American nation. Having won the world cup more than any other country (has won 5 editions) and being the only country to have participated in all editions, the world expects to see something unique come 2014. Besides, they have won the U-17 cup for keeps; they have won the U-20 and have also won several editions of CONCACAF nations' cup.

It is also the home of the popular Maracana stadium; and boasts of a well organized league with teams like Corinthians, Santos, Sao Paolo, Vasco Dagama, etc that have always given a good account of themselves at the club world cup tournaments. They have a population advantage (over 200 million people) and a lot of football enthusiasts.

South Africa has surprised the world by organizing a hitch-free tournament; they provided world class facilities - 8 standard stadiums, smooth roads, standard telecommunications system, 5 star hotels, tourist attractions, adequate security, etc thereby setting the pace that would be difficult for the next host to equal.

They provided something that was unique and in a sense African - the Vuvuzela, that would never be forgotten in haste; and the Jabulani football that was both problematic and fun. What should we expect in Brazil? Would they give us something that would make the Samba dance a thing to remember? What kind of football are we going to see there? I am sure FIFA now knows that the idea behind the Jabulani ball did not really work - the ball did not lead to more goals being scored; rather, it led to most of our stars failing to perform and score goals. It made Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Aguero, Fernando Torres, Frank Lampard, Osaze Odiwingie, Obafemi Martins, Cesc Fabregas, etc. unable to score at least a goal, because of its slippery and directionless nature.

We hope the 2014 host would be able to provide adequate security to players, officials and fans. They confirmed at South Africa that they had started preparations for the next edition. Let's therefore hope we shall be seeing better stadiums, better roads, better communication systems and nice hotel accommodations. Brazil cannot afford to perform less, because the world expects much from her.

FIFA Save The World Cup - Implement These Five Rule Changes For Soccer Before 2014

Soccer is now showcasing its twelfth World Cup event in my lifetime; this is the first one that I've watched. I confess that I'm no expert in soccer. However, as a lawyer with more years of experience than I'd care to remember, I am an expert on rules. I know bad rules when I see them, and soccer's got plenty of them.

I realize that I'm writing in futility since everything I've read about FIFA describes it as a lumbering bureaucracy that moves at the speed of erosion. Worse, reports are that FIFA is enjoying the controversy, happily viewing all of the talk about bad officiating through the prism of "there's no such thing as bad publicity".

FIFA's wrong. Soccer can't grow in such an environment. New fans won't put up with games being decided by referees. Also, soccer, unlike baseball, does not need publicity through controversy, scandal, and conflict. Soccer can keep its world-wide popularity on the merits of the game alone, that and the fact that soccer's so cheap to play. After all, to start a soccer game, all you need is a field, a ball, and a ridiculous set of rules.

I also understand that FIFA won't change the rules until Adidas, McDonald's, Budweiser, and Nike tell them to. But in the wake of the worst refereed major sporting event since Wrestlemania, perhaps it's time for discussion about new ways for soccer to be officiated. I have a growing appreciation for the game, particularly it's sudden action and speed, the latter being an element that still eludes American professional sport and its break-in-the-action pace.

Despite my growing appreciation for the game, however, the 2010 edition of the World Cup has lead me to the conclusion that soccer is a great sport but one not living up to its potential due to betrayal by its rules, officials and governing body. Watching FIFA and the referees smothering soccer's untapped potential is as frustrating as watching a jockey choke out a great thoroughbred.

As the kettle of game-altering bad calls gets added to with each round, followed by the inevitable shrug of the shoulders by FIFA, it's hard to know where to begin reform. My vote is to start on the field of play. And the best place to start there is to change the rules so that they ask less of the officials and return the games' outcomes to the athletes.

1. First and foremost, change the damn offside rule. The offside rule in soccer stands as the single most absurd rule to have ever appeared in organized sport. The problems with the rule are myriad. On a conceptual level, it is the only rule where one team can control a boundary on the field. Incredibly, the defending team's players can actually make an opponent offside by simply running forward when the pass is made. This defensive "play" fails to exhibit any athletic skill, ends real scoring chances that are precious in soccer, and looks foolish. Boundaries on a sports field should be fixed and immovable.

Practically speaking, the offside rule requires the referee's assistant to watch too many events at one time, events that are separated by distance and which occur in a split second. For a typical pass into the penalty area, which is where the most controversial blown calls occur, the official must see the passing player pass the ball and simultaneously see the location of the receiving player and compare that position (at the time of the pass) with the position of defending players. Since the offside boundary is constantly moving, the official often has to make this call while himself moving, a further complicating factor. If the official happens to be up field or down field from this moving line, his ability to accurately make the offside call is severely compromised.

Since there commonly exists distance between the passing and receiving players, it is physically impossible for an official to see both simultaneously. To call the play correctly then, the official would need independently operating eyes, a benefit not yet conferred on us by evolution. Thus, the existing offside rule can only be called reliably by lizards, horses, or Marty Feldman. Little wonder that replays consistently show the call on the field to be incorrect.

The solution? Borrow from hockey. Soccer should create a fixed line on the field. Draw a line ten yards out from the top of the penalty area. Once the ball is advanced over that line, the offsides rule would cease to apply. All passes would be legal. For passes started beyond the line, the offsides rule would still control. This rule would be much easier to call thus reducing critical blown calls. The rule would also increase the excitement of the game through more scoring chances, particularly on sets into the box from out wide.

2. Allow replay on goals. There is nothing more frustrating for a fan than watching a blown call on a score. In soccer, a blown call on a goal is game-changing. Such blown calls strain the patience of hard core fans and turn off new ones. FIFA's stubbornness and complete unreasonableness on this basic issue only exacerbates fan frustration and anger. People support athletics to be entertained by great athletes, not outraged by bad officiating. If you put on a sporting event and the fan comes away feeling cheated and angry, you've failed as a governing body and started the clock on your sports demise in prestige.

Technology has given the fan the ability to see the truth about a goal on the screen, whether it be television or smart phone, and the truth is a powerful force. FIFA refuses to employ such technology at great cost to the game. Fans won't repeatedly swallow a fiction about "keeping the game pure" as justification for not using such technology when the truth is playing out on a screen right in front of them.

FIFA needs to use goal line technology and allow coaches, like the NFL, to have replay challenges on goals. If FIFA won't pop for goal line cameras, at least stick a volunteer behind the net as a goal judge. The NHL has goal judges for all of its games. It is preposterous for FIFA, in soccer's equivalent of the Super Bowl, to rely upon officials standing twenty or thirty years away to have the final and only say on goals.

3. Allow free substitutions. Even the most ardent soccer fan must admit that play can get pretty ragged in the second half as the players tire. Nothing good accrues to the sport from having fans watch tiring players run around a field. To borrow from hockey again, allow the teams to freely substitute players in and out during the game, even allow changes on the fly. Such a rule would underscore the talent and athleticism of the players. Consider how much more exciting and fast-paced the game would be throughout if it were contested by rested athletes playing on fresh legs.

4. Stop the clock during injuries and goal celebrations. Why leave the amount of lost time during the game to the referee's discretion? Just stop the damn clock. Delays caused by goal celebrations and injuries prejudice the team that's behind. How many times have you watched your team be down and lose minute after minute of critical game time to the other team's players rolling around on the field with exaggerated injuries? There's no point to making the referee approximate stoppage time which is usually inadequate, just let him stop the clock.

5. Don't make a red-carded team play short-handed. Isn't an ejection and free kick punishment enough? Making the penalized team also play short-handed for the balance of the game is giving one foul too great an effect on the final score. The call becomes destiny for the penalized team. The rules should allow the penalized team to substitute in a new player.

This World Cup has been a watershed event. Soccer needs to grow from all of the bad calls stemming from all of the bad rules. One final suggestion in vain to FIFA, leave soccer's rule-making to the Americans. We're better at rules than the Europeans. We think about them a lot, change them often, debate them all the time. We built a pretty decent society on a good set of rules. You ask Europeans to think up rules and they come back with fascism, poll taxes, and the Stamp Act. We'll handle it. We defeated communism; we can defeat that other global menace, the offside rule.

World Player of the Year 2009 Cristiano Ronaldo

Christiano Ronaldo is a kind of player who can impress you only through his presence on the field. No doubt, he has great talent and super control on the ball. He becomes FIFA World player at its last even. He beat his biggest rival Argentina's Lionel Messi by vote. Who has better talent you cannot judge them. Because, on their given they are equally dangerous.

Christiano Ronaldo came to Manchester United as a 17 years old young boy. Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson brought him into the team in place of super star footballer David Beck ham. At that time, nobody could expect that this boy can full fill the lacking of David Beck ham. However, Ronaldo proved them wrong and not only full fill David's lacking but become even bigger superstar of football.

He has great sense of the game. He understands the game so well and reacts so quickly according to the situation of the game. He has very good skill of dribbling with the ball and super speed of run through the field. One more great skill he has and that is his ability of scoring goals from free kicks. Whenever he gets a chance to score from free kicks, he gets success most of the time.

In 2007-08 sessions, he scored over 40 goals but not a striker. His actual position in the field is winger. He can use both of his legs effectively and get success to score with his both legs. He can produce lot of chances to others to score goals also. Some football critics say he is the best professional footballer at present. He started his carrier as winger. However, becomes a successful striker of the game. The way he is playing these days, which is forcing people to become his fans. We can see he is easily the most famous footballer in earth today. Last year two of the biggest and richest clubs of football planet were fighting each other for him. At last, everything settled down quite nicely. Now Christiano Ronaldo is happily playing for his club Manchester United.

FIFA Suspends Nigeria From All Competitions

The world football governing body FIFA has descended its disciplinary hammer on Nigeria for what it termed 'Government interference in football matters.' This action has long been awaited by a lot of soccer followers, following the protracted tussles between government authorities and The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

This step taken by FIFA would have been long averted if football had been administered by men of reputation in the country. The country has carved a niche for herself in the sphere of soccer by being Africa's most respected country in that area. Unfortunately, those in charge of football have only been interested in how much they could make for themselves and not how to move the country forward soccer wise.

This unfortunate twist has affected the country's football fortunes negatively in recent times. The performances of the various age grade teams have nosedived; most recently Nigeria was eliminated from the Africa U-17 championship qualifiers by Congo. Needless to talk about the lackluster performance of the Super Eagles at the 2010 world cup in South Africa. The fortunes of The Super Falcons also dwindled as they lost the last Africa Women Championship title to little known Equatorial Guinea.

In most countries of the world, soccer is administered by people who know about the game, especially ex-footballers and those who are passionate about the game. The reverse has been the case in Nigeria where football is administered by those who know little or nothing about sports.

The abolition of the unpopular decree 101 was supposed to bring succour to soccer administration in the country; but the Mafias and insatiable politicians in sports have refused to let go. They have denied the people with the wherewithal the chance to run football.

The government has invested much in football with little or nothing to show for it. Each time there's a major competition, there has always been the issue of poor preparation due to unavailability of funds. In recent times funds meant for the national teams were either reported stolen, misappropriated or mismanaged by the authorities.

Elections were to be conducted recently to bring in credible people to run football: unfortunately the process was hijacked by the 'pot bellies' who believed their placentas have been planted in the 'glass house' and that no other person should be allowed to come in and change the way things are being done there.

In as much as FIFA does not condone government interference, there should be a mechanism put in place to ensure that only people are accountable to the masses are allowed to manage the game of soccer. Corrupt people should not be allowed to perpetuate themselves in office.

FIFA should think of working with government to evolve a system that would help get the best hands to take care of football rather than being antagonistic to moves made by the latter to sanitize the system. They should work as partners and work together for the good of the game. By so doing, the game would develop faster and more money would be made by the countries and by FIFA.

When there is less corruption, enough money would be made available for players' welfare and for organizing trainings, friendlies, and for executing developmental projects. When the right things are done, there would be less friction between players and the officials regarding payment of bonuses, return tickets and treatment of injured players.

FIFA should once again take a look at the good side of what government is trying to do with the Nigerian football, and co-operate with the government to move the game of soccer forward as banning Nigeria at this crucial time would be counter-productive.

The FIFA Rules Are no Longer Enough

And then the world cup ends ... The last game between France and Italy is probably exemplary for the quality of soccer these days.

What should you make of this. The emotion about what happened has not faded yet, but whatever Materazzi said to Zidane, there is no excuse for his behavior. The only relief is that after such an incident you inquiry some more in the background of Materazzi and you understand why he is labeled "the animal" and "delinquent" in his home country (http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/060622/2/ksf4.html).

Work to do for the organizing party FIFA if they want to remain their credibility when uttering "fair-play."

Acting on visible actions alone is not enough. The stress of the game leaves no time for any referee to take the right action. The system of yellow and red cards is no longer enough. In order to increase to quality level of soccer the FIFA needs to introduce something like a point system that it also used for drivers licenses.

When a driver -- this has recently been introduced in Spain (but seems to function in France for example) -- neglect the rules, he will be penalized for each infringement with a certain amount of points. The accumulation of these point will finally make that the driver (read soccer player) will loose his permit to drive (play).
Little incidents like this would cost a player for example 1 point (out of ten):

And a series of incidents taken together like these: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpG4AHlZrL4) should make sure that the player is out of any future game. A red card wouldn't be of any help here.

We need a memory system to cover this kind of behavior.

If not such a memory system, I would like to know what FIFA will come up with. It is clear that they need to do something. Soccer players -- especially those top players that reach thousands of spectators (kids that stay up to watch a game) over the world -- are to set an example. Not only showing their talent to dominate a technique, but that they dominate their animal instinct. Or they should select a sport like kick boxing or free fight.

Soccer on Television

Soccer on television is very different from the more-felt experience live soccer game from a stadium. Though there are many conveniences for both aspects of watching, there is still a noticeable discrepancy regarding the impact of a live game than a televised game on television.

For those who just can't afford or can't make it to the stadium, be thankful for television and for the coverage. Not all soccer games achieve high-ratings in television but there is one international tournament though that when held, all over the world is glued into the television set. This tournament would definitely be the FIFA World Cup. Once matches on the World Cup are shown on T.V., most people get hooked into it and with the help of Sports Channels, the live coverage make it easier for followers to feel the excitement and be blown away by the game even by just watching at home.

Soccer on television has made the once locally famous Soccer stars shine and helped them become the international superstars of today. With the help of television, the once unnoticed talents from around the world become household names. People has got a lot to thank for the invention of television and one of these reasons is that it helps to let us see things and matches that we could never actually see due to locations. Without television, people will have a hard time appreciating the game of soccer and the players that make it worthwhile. So for those non-lovers of Soccer, try watching a game on T.V., preferably a FIFA World Cup game, and experience what Soccer is all about.

Fun Facts About Haiti - The First Black Republic in the World!

Haiti & Olympics

Did you know... Haiti's shooters -- Ludovic Valborge, L. H. Clertmont, Astrel Rolland, Destin Destine, C. Dupre, Eloi Metullus & Ludovic Augustin -- won a bronze medal at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games -- making it the first black nation in the globe to win a Summer Olympic medal. This medal made Haiti the poorest country ever to win an Olympic medal. Surprisingly they do it in an island where there are few sports facilities. Certainly the Caribbean team was a "dark horse" in France.

Katherine Dunham & Haiti

Did you know... The island nation of Haiti was once home to Katherine Dunham, one of the most successful dancers of the 20th century. Undoubtedly she loved Haiti. America's Katherine Dunham had long been fascinated by the Haitian culture and traditions. Her book "Island Possessed" ( 1969 ) is a tribute to this Caribbean nation. In 2002 she, who was born in Glenn Ellyn ( Illinois, USA ), forced the world to pay attention to the Haitian-boat people. Today Katherine is a national heroine in Haiti.

National Symbols

Did you know... Since 1804 Haiti has had four national flags.

World-famous Haitians

Did you know... Wyclef Neluset Jean -- Haiti's image abroad -- is a world-renowned Haitian musician. Currently he is a Haiti's advocate in the world.

Haiti & the United States

Did you know... Washington has close ties to Haiti. Since the 1930s, many American leaders have visited Haiti. In this context, president Franklin Delano Roosevelt ( 1933-1945 ) traveled to Haiti in 1934. Sixty-one years later, Bill Clinton became the second American president to come to Haiti. President Clinton arrived in Port-au-Prince to confer with Jean-Bertrand Aristide ( country's president ). On the other hand, Colin Powell, Secretary of State, went to the country in 2004. In 2008, Laura Bush, America's First Lady, was the guest of honour of the Haitian government. Subsequently, Hillary Clinton, current Secretary of State, accepted an invitation to visit Haiti. In Port-au-Prince, she , who visited the country in 1998, met with high-ranking Haitian officials.

In the mid-1990s, Jimmy Carter, 2002 Nobel Peace Prize and former U.S. president, played a key role in bringing an end to military rule in Haiti.

Population

Did you know... Five decades ago Haitians could expect to live 39 years. Today they can look forward to 60.

Women & Power

Did you know... In Haiti females were allowed to vote from 1950 -- Women make up a majority of the population. Over the past decades, this Caribbean nation has had two female leaders. In 1991 Ertha Pascal-Trouillot -- one of the world's shortest-serving women presidents -- became the first black woman president in the Western Hemisphere. Four years on, Claudette Werleigh was named Head of Government by Haiti's Head of State Jean-Bertrand Aristide. On the other hand, Michaelle Jean, Canada's Governor-General, was born on the island of Haiti. She has lived in Canada since 1968. In 2006 Michaelle went to Port-au-Prince.

Geography

Did you know... Haiti is about the size of Maryland. This country has been described as the "Pearl of the Caribbean".

Africa & Haiti

Haiti & the FIFA World Cup

Did you know... In 1974 Haiti lived up to their reputation as one of the best teams in the Caribbean by winning the Concacaf Cup. Haiti became the first Caribbean soccer team to take the Concacaf title breaking a 30-year strong hold by Mexico. During that regional tournament, Haiti also qualified for the global championships in Munich, West Germany. The country had never qualified for a major soccer tournament before. This international title gave Haiti a moment of joy and glory. In Europe, Haiti and Zaire -- today the Democratic Republic of the Congo ( Africa ) -- were the first black republics to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in the 20th century.

Haiti & Miss Universe Pageant

Did you know... Haiti's contestant, Gerthie David, who speaks French & English, came close to winning the Miss Universe pageant in San Salvador ( El Salvador, Central America ) in the mid-1970s. Surprisingly Gerthie -- who was the country's third representative -- became the second black woman to qualify for the finals in MU. Apparently Haiti's Gerthie David was supported by two international judges -- Sarah Vaughan ( an American-born Grammy-winning singer ) and Jean-Claude Killy (a former Olympic champ and current Olympic leader ). According to a newspaper of San Salvador, Miss Haiti was one of the 11 favorites to win the global title. She had surprised and delighted many at this international beauty pageant. On the other hand, in 1977, for the first time, Haiti sent a non-black woman to compete in the MU in the Dominican Republic.

Culture

Soccer World Cup 2010 Cancelled - South Africa, Not Ready!

Are you expecting to see a news headline like, "Soccer World Cup 2010 Cancelled - South Africa, Not Ready!" What about this one, "SA not Capable of Hosting a Successful Cup!" What about, "2010 Has No Benefit for the Average South African!". Many believe South Africa is not capable of hosting a World Cup, citing a bucket full of problems from lack of infrastructure to Swine Flu! Well the IOC, FIFA & the SA government disagree and they all believe that the hosting of a big even is not only possible but will be the best ever and the answer to our economic woes to boot, and I for one, am pleased, as my woes are increasingly nasty.

What about property? According to the hype, by 2010 and 1 day we will all be retired with fat property portfolios, pretty cool hey? But is it true? Were the Chinese really in an once-in-a-lifetime property-buying opportunity during the Olympics? Karen Robinson in The Sunday Times tells us that - Athens, Sydney, Atlanta and Barcelona - all saw property prices outperform their national markets in the 5 years leading up to the games. Barcelona - most impressive - prices rose 49% than they did in the rest of Spain. The differential in Sydney was 11%, in Athens 9%, and in Atlanta 6%.

No every one is so sure the growth is a given, Emma Thelwell notes that not all the games took place amid ongoing property booms & London games will likely coincide with a property slump, so will London see growth? It seems more likely to be small, and another factor is that prices in east London climbed 40% ahead of the national trend over the past few years, so they are starting from a high. In South Sydney, far from the Olympic stadium, prices rose significantly faster than in the Olympic corridor in the run up to the games and Michael Bounds published a paper on the Games' impact on the property market says it was essentially because the area was already undergoing regeneration.

So if you insist on trying to make your fortune out of SA or London property markets, look for areas that will do best out of regeneration. Sorry looks like it depends where your property lies in the scheme of things. So in South Africa I guess the regeneration of former, "urban decay" areas will probably be a better bet that upmarket areas in terms of % growth, as a result of 2010? Some say the tournament will never happen anyway, they believe SA will not be ready, that Swine Flu or political chaos will kill the dream? Not according to Blatter who said in an interview with the FM, "There is no reason to believe that we will have to re-evaluate the situation of the 2010 World Cup due to any organizational issues... We are convinced that the World Cup will take place in SA."

Is Blatter gambling, I doubt it? Remember that FIFA's makes 86% of its revenue from this single event that is staged every four years, so they leave nothing to chance when it comes to the World Cup and it seems to be paying off. The federation's 2007- 2010 revenue budget is US$3,2bn, and it has already raised $3,1bn through the sale of sponsorship and broadcasting rights for the South African World Cup - double the $1,8bn revenue it made in Germany. So what else will 2010 have in store for South Africa! The truth is that the Soccer World Cup hardly touched German economy at all according to a report released in Germany. "The World Cup's contribution to economic growth has been negligible. It was great fun. Nothing more, nothing less."

Can this be true? Even after consulting firm Grant Thornton said that the World Cup will pump around R21.3-billion into South Africa's economy, generating an estimated R12.7-billion in direct spending and creating an estimated 159 000 new jobs? The short answer is yes, the truth is the capital expenditure always outweighs the income, the stadiums alone are reported to be costing R11- billion, road infrastructure - R14- billion, Airports Company SA - R20- billion, National Roads - R70- billion, Metro rail - R18- billion.

Goolam Ballim, (chief economist - Standard Bank) believes,"...the indirect impact may be more meaningful for a sustainable economic lift in subsequent years... it will help change the perceptions that a large number of foreign investors hold of Africa and South Africa." In the short term the country's tourism industry will benefit from the estimated three million visitors expected for the tournament, while construction and engineering companies will look to a slice of the billions to be spent on infrastructure in the lead-up to the event. So unless you are actually building the stadium, have a guest house or sell beer don't order the yacht just yet. The real good news for South Africa is the legacy of 2010. The improved infrastructure and heightened international awareness, this is the platform for success not the prize.

John Mauldin, recently voted second only to Warren Buffet as an investment guru, after visiting SA had this to say about, "Finding Value in South Africa, "There is much to like about emerging markets. That is where a great deal of the real potential growth in the coming decades will be. And South Africa will be one of the better stories. If you are not doing business there already, you should ask yourself, why not?" Wow, a strong endorsement, so the WC is coming, the stadiums are all but finished and best of all South Africa has just had a peaceful, free and democratic election - WOW!

FIFA World Cup 2010 - Top Golden Boot Contenders

Only 4 teams remain, and apart from speculating on which team will win the World Cup, everyone is keen to find out which player will win the Golden Boot, in other words, who will be the top scorer.

Along with the Golden Glove given to the best goalkeeper of the tournament, the Golden Boot is a coveted individual award, and a matter of pride for the player who wins it.

Let's take a look at the goal scoring leaders, as they stand, after the quarter-finals:

Villa (Spain): 5

Klose (Germany): 4

Muller (Germany): 4

Sneijder (Holland): 3

Forlan (Uruguay): 3

Suarez (Uruguay): 3

In the above list, I have not included Higuain of Argentina, and Vittek of Slovakia, both with 4 goals, because their teams have been knocked out of the World Cup.

Podolski (Germany) with 2 goals could have two high scoring games and run away with the award, although he is not in the list. Others like Huntelaar (Holland), Cacau (Germany) and Friedrich (Germany) have one goal each, and only a brave person could predict that any of these players might get the award.

Much hinges on the Spain Vs Germany semi-final. If Germany win, Klose and Muller could be the front-runners. On the other hand, if Spain enter the final, David Villa could increase the gap between himself and the scorer of the second highest number of goals, at this World Cup.

At the same time, we cannot rule out the losing semi-finalists who would still have one match to go, when they fight to decide who will occupy the third and fourth positions at the tournament. And as this could affect the FIFA ranking of the teams, we can expect the teams to fight it out.

So even if Uruguay lose to Spain, Diego Forlan would still be in line for the Golden Boot, if he does well in the match against the other losing semi-finalists. there's no denying that Forlan has been one of the brightest spots of this year's event.

Also, if Holland do well, Sneijder could leave the Spanish and German contenders behind. Holland are expected to beat Uruguay, but they would have to do so by a good margin, for Sneijder to be able to get a good share, to not only catch up, but take a lead over the others ahead of him, at this time.

Who do I think will take it? My nomination goes to... David Villa of Spain!

2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer Jerseys - Show Support For Your Country

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will take place in South Africa this year. 32 nations have qualified for the World Cup finals. If you live in one of those lucky nations that have qualified for the World Cup you will want to support your nation in every possible way. Soccer jerseys are a great way to support your nation.

Every 4 years the World Cup is hosted by a different nation. The nation gets to qualify automatically into the final 32. The number of viewers of this cup event is in the hundreds of millions. People who live in a country that has qualified into the cup event, love supporting their team every step of the way.

As teams progress further and further into the latter stages of the competition, the buzz in the air of a country that has reached these stages just goes through the roof. Countries that didn't make the finals still end up watching the amazing matches and get behind a team that they love.

Teams this year are sporting newly designed soccer jerseys. There are both home and away designs and each country has their own stunning design for their soccer jersey. Expressing support for your country is easy by getting hold of your own country's soccer jersey. If you are daring enough you can even get behind a country that you just love watching.

Soccer jerseys are made by many famous manufacturers such as Nike and Adidas. They are made of very high quality material and will last for many years. You can go one step further to supporting your country, by travelling to South Africa and watching the games live sporting your new soccer jersey.

For many, wearing your soccer jersey in front of a large TV with a large number of people is the way to go. If your team wins that match you are watching then your soccer jersey will be worth a lot more.

The official world cup jerseys will be very expensive, but you can be rest assured that the cost can be justified. You are getting something of high quality and official.

You can go even as far as purchasing a particular individual's jersey with their name and number attached to it. Sporting greats like Harry Kewell for Australia will have soccer jerseys available for purchase.

The best way to get your 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer jerseys will be to go online and purchase them there. They offer a large amount of stock of all different sizes. You can shop online in the comfort of your own home and purchase a jersey to support your country.

This is the best time to buy world cup jerseys because the World Cup kicks off on the 11th of June 2010 and ends on the 11th of July 2010. For me, since I am Australian, I will be sporting the World Cup Jersey for Australia. I am with them all the way.

This year Australia has qualified into Group D. They will be playing Germany first. Ghana and Serbia are also in the same group as them. I will be wearing my jersey and supporting my favourite team every step of the way.

In the previous World Cup which was won by Italy, thousands and thousands of jerseys were sold to the general public and nearly every one of these people sported these jerseys while watching their favourite team play.

In conclusion, grab a soccer jersey online today and support your team in this year's amazing 2010 FIFA World Cup. I will be rooting for Australia and I hope they progress further than they did back in 2006.

Who is Mia Hamm?

Mia Hamm was born Mariel Margaret Hamm in 1972, and who could have foretold that she would go on to become one of the most famous soccer players in the world? She played for many years on the U.S. team, as a forward, and she has scored more goals in her international career than ANY player, male or female, in history.

Mia Hamm is a household name in the United States, as well as in the countries whose teams she has helped the U.S. to beat in international competition. She is an asset to the U.S. team and a role model for the next generation of female athletes here in the States. She received scholarships that in days not long ago were given only to men, and she got the training she needed to become an elite athlete.

Hamm was named the women's FIFA Player of the Year the first two times that award was ever given out, in 2001 and 2002, and she is listed as one of FIFA's 125 all time best living players, a list that was compiled by Pele!

Mia retired from soccer in 2004, and played her last game in the 2004 Fan Celebration Tour, which commemorated the U.S. Women's National team's Olympic victory in 2004. 2007 was her first year of eligibility for the National Soccer Hall of Fame, and she was selected to be inducted by 137 out of 141 votes cast. Womens Professional Soccer, a league that was started just in 2009, features her silhouette in its logo. Hamm was also inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Mia Hamm spent her early years on Air Force bases with her parents Bill and Stephanie Hamm, and five siblings. She started organized sports at a very early age, and she joined the U.S. women's national team at the age of 15, the youngest ever to play for them.

She attended UNC Chapel Hill, helping the Tarheels to four NCAA championships. In fact, the team lost only ONE game that she played in during her career there!

In 1991, when the U.S. womens national team won the FIFA Womens World Cup for the first time ever, Hamm became the youngest American Woman to win a World Cup championship, at 19 years of age.

In 1997, Hamm founded the Mia Hamm Foundation, which is dedicated to bone marrow research, as well as to helping womens' sports teams make progress.

In 1999, Hamm broke the all-time international football/soccer goal record, when she scored her 158th goal in a game in Orlando Florida, against Brazil. The same year, Nike named the largest building at their corporate offices after Hamm, and that year she again led the U.S. to the Championship at the Womens FIFA World Cup.

In 2004, she announced that she would retire after the Athens Olympics, to settle down and start a family with her husband, baseball great Nomar Garciaparra.

Victory of Pakistan Hockey in 1994 Sydney World Cup

One of the most memorable wins for Pakistan in Hockey is the World Cup win in 1994 that brought to the forefront a hero - Shahbaz Ahmad. He went on to become one of the best forwards in the history of Pakistan Hockey. After having joined the national hockey team in 1986, he masterminded a brilliant win - the 1994 world cup. Shahbaz Ahmad was nicknamed "the man with the electric heels" and led Pakistan from the front in the 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989 Champions Trophy tournaments; 1988 Seoul Olympics; 1989 Asia Cup in New Delhi; 1990 World Hockey Cup in Lahore; 1990 BMW Trophy Amsterdam; 1990 Beijing Asiad and the most memorable of them all - the 1994 World Cup Hockey in Sydney.

The Hockey World Championships is considered to be an international field hockey competition just like FIFA soccer world cup where teams from across the world participate to win the coveted cup. It is organized once every 4 years by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The first world cup was started in 1971. There are two versions of the Hockey world cup - the men's and the women's. So far five countries have dominated the Hockey world cup but the most successful team is Pakistan who has won it four times. The Netherlands has won the Hockey world cup three times, Germany two times while both India and Australia have won it once. The 2010 Hockey world cup is going to be held in India.

In fact, the entire concept of the Hockey World Cup was conceived by Air Marshal Nur Khan of Pakistan. The idea was proposed to FIH under the name of Patrick Rowley who was the first editor of the World Hockey magazine. The idea got the approval on 26th October, 1969 and was adopted by the then FIH Council in a meeting that was held in Brussels on 12th April, 1970. The FIH came to the conclusion that the inaugural or first hockey World Cup should be held in Pakistan in October 1971. However, due to political strife and several other issues, the venue of the World Cup was moved from Pakistan to the Real Club de Polo grounds in Barcelona, Spain.

The 1971 Hockey world cup in Spain was won by Pakistan who defeated Spain 1-0 in the finals. In the 1994 World Cup in Sydney Australia, Pakistan was up against a strong opponent - The Netherlands. The match ended in a 1-1 draw and went into extra time and then into penalties. Pakistan then went on to win the final on penalties and the score line read 4-3. This was the 4th world cup for Pakistan and Shahbaz Ahmad led them to victory in style. This further reinforced Pakistan as one of the top hockey playing countries of the world. Shahbaz Ahmad also won another laurel - the player of the tournament.

As the 2010 Hockey world cup date draws close, we will have to wait and watch out for the "men in green!"

Adidas Soccer Ball - It's Humble Beginnings

ADIDAS came from the combined three-letter nickname of Adolph which is Adi and the first three-letter of his last name which is Dassler, thus forming the most famous brand, ADIDAS and where the leading Adidas soccer ball came from. Adidas' advent into soccer ball begun in the early 1970's when FIFA soccer commissioned the company to supply the annual competition with its official match ball.

Way long before the 1970 Mexico match, Adidas has been inspired already by the Chilean World Cup in 1962. They were so engrossed of that match that the company named their first series of World Cup balls "Santiago". This was the start of the company's success. Many of their soccer ball series came out after the initial feat of their Santiago.

Listed below were the names of the company's historical soccer ball series and the years they were produced:

1970 (Mexico): TELSTAR - It consists of 12 black panels of pentagon patterns and 20 white hexagonal patterns fitted together.

1974 (West Germany): CHILE-DURLAST - This model followed the TELSTAR success in Mexico.

1978 (Argentina): TANGO - This model is named after the national dance of the Argentina, the Tango.

1982 (Spain): TANGO ESPAÑA - This is the first Adidas soccer ball to be fitted with the most advanced water-proofing materials.

1986 (Mexico): AZTECA - This model is a little more advanced, polyurethane made and water proof.

1990 (Italy): ETRUSCO - Aside from polyurethane foam interior, fabric coated underneath layer is coated with latex to prevent tearing and maintained stability.

1994 (USA): QUESTRA - It is meant to fly faster when kicked. It was made of polystyrene foam exterior.

1998 (France): TRICOLOR - It is named after the three-colored French flag.

2002 (KOREA-JAPAN): FEVERNOVA - This ball has a thicker inner layer to have an accuracy of its trajectory.

2006 (Germany): TEAMGEIST - This latest model is dubbed the most accurate and the most precise soccer ball ever produced by the most successful company.

For sure this is not the last ball that this company could produce. As long as this company existed, more and more innovations would still continue to come up and will be enjoyed by future players.
